Characters from M*A*S*H* We’ve All Worked With
There is an iconic television show from a few decades back that took a comedic spin on a mobile hospital unit during the Korean War. We are, of course, talking about the Hit Show ‘Mash’. Even the toughest businesses can’t be compared to war, yet those who perform such heroism at work, bring many of the same thoughts, hopes, fears, and dreams we all do. Let’s break down the comedic cast of Mash, what makes them tick, and we’ll see just how well they line up to the Characters We Work With
The Radar O’Reilly
Within every organization there are movers and shakers, decision-makers and worker-bees, each of whom plays a critical role in keeping the training on the tracks, and make the overall business successful. It is a familiar hierarchy, and is comforting to have a structure in place that everyone can quickly understand, as it provides a path for people to know what the next step is and craft their plan to get there. Radar does not fall in either camp. He is a good worker, but not one that contributes to the products and services your company offers, and never is he looked at to help make decisions, devise new strategies, and your sense is that Radar may not exactly know what the company does. But he is counted on to communicate, to deliver messages between organizations and teams, and does so exceedingly well. His role probably falls somewhere between HR and PR, and he likely isn’t sure either. He is a great asset because he will do whatever he is asked to do, and without questioning the message or the audience, he puts a smile on his face, and scurries off to complete the assignment. It is great to have people like Radar in the organization, as they never want more than they have, content to do what they do, and for those that count on him, his reliability and consistency is simply unmatched.

The ‘Hot Lips’-Margaret Houlihan
Hot Lips is a great colleague and teammate. She is funny, engaging, highly intelligent and incredibly skilled at what she does. While she takes her work very seriously, and those around her, as well as those in the executive offices, notice how valuable she is. She is held in high regard and you have seen how those with similar talent often possess an ego that puts people off. Hot Lips is the rare breed, who is the truly great person who happens to have incredible talent. She operates with humility and magnanimity, always willing to spread what could be her own kudos to the broader team. Hot Lips knows the value of paying it forward, never accepting sole credit for any of her good work, willing to call out all staff members who played a part in the success of a product or initiative. You are grateful to know and work along side Hot Lips because you learn something from her each day, and genuinely enjoy the time working closely with her…although, you only ever refer to her as Margaret!

The Max Klinger
Klinger is an office favorite. He has an administrative role that has him bouncing around the office throughout each workday. You look at his work as a bit monotonous for your taste, but he seems to have embraced it a long time ago, and developed a flair and brand that is original and unique. Klinger exudes personality, can always be counted on to give everyone a laugh as he is dropping off mail, packages, inter-office memos or flowers that get delivered on birthdays and anniversaries. When Klinger breezes through, he simply makes people feel good. Sure, there are many people who could step in and perform his role, but you hope that day never comes, because you know no one will deliver what Klinger does just by being himself.

The Colonel Potter
Colonel Potter is in charge of your organization. The Hawkeye
You are fortunate to work where you do, surrounded by talent and skill unlike other places you have ever worked. Your company has done an exceptional job hiring the right people with not only great skill for the jobs they have but with great personality that has seen everyone mix together at a level that is truly unique. Hawkeye personifies this perfect mix you have found in your organization. He is the straw that stirs the drink, counted on to deliver the goods at the highest level with his incredible talent, and also help everyone not to take themselves too seriously, able to lead the way in staying calm through business storms, and even laugh when things are getting too serious. Hawkeye is perhaps the most talented of all of your colleagues, well-educated and trained. You know Hawkeye could be doing this work for greater compensation in a more glamorous environment, and reap a level of benefit more commensurate with his talent. But you see that this is not what drives Hawkeye. Like you, he recognizes that there is something special here, something he will not likely find should he go for a money grab or title chase. He has figured out that happiness can’t be found in a paycheck or a title. He could make more, but makes enough to be comfortable. Hawkeye is family-oriented, a friend to all, and knows that in the end it is the great relationships in our lives that tell the story of who we are and the level of success achieved. Like several colleagues you have had the pleasure of working with throughout your career, working with Hawkeye has already produced lifelong memories that will forever put a smile on your face, has taught you plenty, and provided a role model for how to keep your ego in check no matter how skilled you are in your craft, and how high you rise in business.
We all thankfully don’t put our lives at risk, nor are responsible for the care and recovery of others, day to day. But the people who do are the real-life superheroes among us. Looking at this legendary TV Show, we see how these doctors and military men and women are people just like us. They care about family and friends, maintain good working relationships, and can’t wait to finish their assignment and get home to their loved ones. Few of us have to be away for months or years at a time, but even after a long day, the desire to get home is a shared feeling between the all-star cast of M.A.S.H., and the Characters We Work With.
