Characters We Work With – Sons of Anarchy
The Clay Morrow
Clay has been in charge since you arrived at the company. You know he has been around for a long time and has seen it all. You hear whispers about some past behavior and ongoings that make you increasingly curious about who he is, whether his past may be a shady one, and specifically whether his ascension to power was earned or stolen. You also learn quickly that you should not ask about it, at least not publicly. The time you spend with Clay is always positive. He always has the answers you need, and when you need a connection to people outside your organization, even outside the company, Clay connects you. His network is far-reaching, and you see firsthand how he leverages it to benefit the group. You are grateful to have someone in charge with the expertise and the juice to get things done but are always sure you stay on Clay’s good side.
The Gemma Teller
Gemma, like Clay, has been around a long time. You see that as close as anyone gets to the boss, Gemma is closer, and nothing gets in the way of that dynamic. Working together with Gemma a while, seeing her in action, how she gets things done, you wonder to yourself who is really in charge, suspecting that it may very well be Gemma. She presents herself to you and to everyone with a matriarchal vibe that endears her to all, and you have seen it in action. Gemma knows where to go and who to talk to when something needs to get done, and she is always able to resolve conflicts within the team, as both parties would rather patch up their differences than get on Gemma’s bad side. You also, although never having witnessed an iota of a dark side from the sweet, wholesome Gemma, sense you are smart to cultivate a good relationship with Gemma and keep whatever other side may be lurking within her right where it is.
The Juice Ortiz
Juice is a Go-To-Guy around the office. He is in a small, selective group of people who stay close to the boss, always willing to do his bidding, run his errands. While you trust him, you also know he will be the first to run to the bosses with news or gossip that they would want to hear. Juice’s loyalty to the boss and the team is unwavering, and if you are the boss or value the boss, you are glad to have the Juices of the world, or the office, in that close circle of followers. Whether there is dirty work to be done, the stuff that you can’t explain how it got resolved, or who had to be ‘nudged’ in the right direction to make something happen, you know Juice was involved. He is a generally good guy, relatable and seemingly a friend to all. Provided you stay on his good side, and never cross the line of saying something negative about the boss, or express unhappiness with a decision that has been made, Juice will have your back as well and only say good things to the boss and the boss’ circle. You are not entirely sure of what repercussions would await you if you should step over that line in Juice’s presence, but you know enough to never do so.
The Tara Knowles
Tara has a connection to all of the big wigs, able to come and go as she pleases. You don’t really know how and why she got where she is, never seeing her in action, leading projects or meetings, but she is always around and seemingly in a position of influence. She is officially in middle management, yet you seldom see her name attached to any updates or new initiatives. But because she is always surrounded by the senior leadership team, you regard her as one of them. You treat her as a superior, even though you neither report to her, nor have you been told to do so. Yet you know it. At some point you hope that you will be told who Tara is, what she does, and why she is treated with the deference of a boss. But you know that for now you need to be okay with simply making nice with Tara, staying in her good graces, and asking few questions about her and her value to the team. You have developed a healthy fear, as have most of your colleagues, of some type of repercussion that awaits those who cross Tara and why no one ever does.
The Jax Teller
Jax is the leader-in-waiting in your organization. There is some legacy with Jax, having had some family that were once in power, and although Jax is much newer to the business, you treat him with the respect of his forefathers, knowing you may well be reporting to Jax one day. And you genuinely like him, believing he knows what he is doing. Unlike those who have come to the company and had to learn everything from scratch, you can see that Jax came in with an extensive understanding of how things get done. He operates with the inherent knowledge of how decisions get made, and where the business needs to go next. While Jax shouldn’t have the cache he seems to, being a newer employee, he leans on his familial power and reputation to exert the influence he does, and it is accepted. He exudes leadership, calm and collectedness of your classic power broker or leader. And while you had hoped that you may be the one in the big chair one day, it will be Jax unless he decides to pull a Crazy Ivan and go his own way. And something within you believes he just might.
