Characters We Work With – The Golden Girls
The Dorothy
Dorothy is beloved around the office. She brings the right mix of leadership, sense of humor, and is never afraid to poke fun at herself. She also has the caring vibe of a mother hen and is just as protective of her team. She is the person you go to when you need to vent, just need someone to listen, or need to feel good about yourself. She will always offer good advice, even if it is hard to hear. While many have moved away from making any kind of physical contact with an employee, particularly a subordinate, Dorothy does not subscribe to this. She will put the hand on your shoulder, touch your arm, and give you a hug when she knows you need it. And in a big office like yours, people need the contact, and no one has complained just yet.
The Rose
Rose is a trip. She seems to never have had a bad day by all accounts. She is perpetually happy and bubbly, and only has good things to say about everyone. You wonder how much she really ‘gets it’ when people are explaining business or someone is telling a joke. You debate internally whether she is laughing along or understands what it is about based on the look of bewilderment. As far as her work, it seems as though she gets things done, although you seldom see her buried in paperwork or digging into spreadsheets and databases on her computer like most of your colleagues. You suspect someone is helping her along, or even doing a large part of her work for her. And you are fine with either. It is a pleasure having Rose around, her presence raises morale, and the entire team feels blessed to share the office space with her.
The Blanche
The irascible Blanche is a force to be reckoned with at the office, and you assume everywhere else she goes. She is very good at what she does, and while she is not a braggart about her good work, she is not afraid to brag about other, more personal, aspects of her life. The Blanche carries the confidence of an Olympic gold medalist and possesses the unique ability to be both predictable and unpredictable at the same time. It is completely predictable that Blanche will say something either over the line or heavily straddling it, yet unpredictable where and when it will happen. When it does it will be something that will make you, the boss, and everyone cringe and wonder privately ‘is THIS the one that will get her in trouble?’ – it’s not. She is a servant to her moods, the vibe in the room, and specifically to what is going on in her personal life. When she is happy in her personal life, all is well in the office, and the fun, crazy Blanche does her thing. There’s a stage above that, when she is in love when you see her come in with baked goods, pays for the taco bar at lunch, or drinks after work. When all is good for Blanche, it will be good for all. After a lovers’ quarrel, bad date, or (shudder) a break up….just go on a personal leave for about three weeks and pray the dust has settled by the time you return.
The Sophia
Sophia is an office legend, she has done and seen it all, and can quickly share stories of the business of yesteryear. Like many who reflect on ‘the old days’, it seems they were all great, never a bad time, only wins and successes. But you figure that is how people with a positive attitude look at the world. If there is a single word to sum up Sophia it is ‘Timing’. She always knows when to make an entrance, an exit, when to speak, and when to keep quiet. She is a master at knowing the situation and responding accordingly. Because has been in the business a long time, and is so certain about what she is doing, you get the sense she is holding back sarcasm when ideas for new business ventures or proposed changes to existing ones are shared. She knows better, or certainly believes she does, and will pick the right time to let everyone know it. While many people do the same, Sophia has a way of doing it with a level of humor that even the person who had the good idea and probably disagrees has to laugh, and never actually be mad at Sophia.
The Stanley
Stanley is one of your traveling salespeople. He is not in the office every day, but you see him often enough that he feels like an office regular. You know he too has been in this business a long time, but always on the road. He is not an office type of person, and knowing him, you can see why. He could never adhere to schedules, meetings, break times, etc. He’s a bird who needs to flap his wings and couldn’t be contained within office structure. But he’s good at his role, brings in clients and helps maintain relationships, and is thus able to float in and out when he has to and get what he needs. Interestingly, he has clear history with many of the longer-term people around you, who seem to only ever give him grief when he pops in. He seems like a nice guy, is friendly, cordial, even funny when he wants to be, but is given little grace by the veteran crew for whatever reason. You assume the history between Stanley and those around may not have always been good, but it is not your business so you leave it alone. You like your interactions with Stanley, and are friendly back to him always, while you do enjoy the good-natured ribbing constantly directed at him by the vets.
