Characters We Work With – The Simpsons
The Moe the Bartender
Moe is a fixture around the office and is not even employed with the company you work for. He works for the vendor who does security for the building. You see him every time you come in, when you leave, or step out for lunch. Moe always has a wise crack for you whether it is the first, second, even tenth time you pass by him through the course of the day. While the business world has grown up a bit, and harassment policies have clarified appropriateness in an office, Moe was likely absent that day. He has never stopped with the inappropriate nature of his ‘compliments’ to those who pass by or commenting about others about those who passed by previously. And while you are held to the highest standards of workplace behavioral standards, Moe keeps on truckin’. But it’s okay, he doesn’t work there.
The Marge Simpson
Marge is the rock that holds the office together. With so many personalities surrounding you, you often feel like a pinball machine deflecting one ball after another, wondering who will be beaming from landing a new account, and who will be in the midst of a personal crisis. Rest assured that Marge will be there to celebrate the good, the bad, to be the peacemaker, mediator, or shoulder to cry on when needed. She brings the perfect personality for the office, never gossipy or judgmental, accepting everyone for who they are, trying to help everyone get along and keep the train running smoothly. And God bless her, she does it well.
The Mr. Burns
Generations have changed the way they look at work and career. For example, ‘baby boomers’ and their predecessors often worked for a single company for their entire career, while later generations have moved more frequently between companies. At some point, spanning all generations, we have all had the Mr. Burns in charge. It is not the age of the boss that defines the Mr. Burns as much as his actions. He is sneaky, petty, and outright dangerous when it comes to what he may do to you and your career if you get on his bad side. What power he has, he wields it like Darth Vader wields a light saber. While he will occasionally use his power for good, those moments are rare. His sadistic side can only be held at bay for so long before he pulls some unholy power move that will hit you hard if you are not quick enough to duck when it comes your way.
The Ned Flanders
Everybody loves Ned. He projects a heart of gold image and appears to lead the cleanest life of anyone in the office. You believe he is a God-fearing, church going, tremendous family man, although you have never gotten close enough to Ned to be certain. You have never heard Ned cuss, nor say anything inappropriate, and any time someone comes in with a flat tire, or a car that won’t start, it is always Ned who happens to have jumper cables in his desk drawer ready to spring into action. Perhaps it is your inner cynic, but something within you is not sure if everything you see in Ned is all that is really there, or if there is not a dark side to Ned. Despite never having seen anything to suggest that what you see is a façade, you always keep one eye open for Ned hoping to catch a glimpse of him watching an inappropriate video or stealing office supplies. And yes, you are a bad person for thinking that! People actually can be that good.
The Edna (Mrs. Krabappel)
Mrs. Krabappel has been around forever and knows exactly how everything works around the office. She knows where all the bodies are buried…figuratively. She has seen and done it all it would appear. You hear that she was once an ‘A’ player up for many a promotion, was the leader of many high-profile projects, and served as the top liaison to the most important clients. That is not the Mrs. Krabappel you work with today. The current version checked out a long time ago, and does just enough to get by, producing mediocre work that inspires no one, but is not mistake-ridden either. At some point, predating your arrival, she made the choice to forgo the fast-track, and settle in for the long winter’s nap of the career wind down. She now lives as much for office gossip and drama as anything. You sense that she does not have much of a social life, and thus feeds off of office ongoings, relationships and politics to keep her interested in her work.
The Homer Simpson
Seriously? We’ve all worked with some outrageously poor performers who mess up even the simplest tasks, but Homer may be the one character that thankfully none of us have had the misfortune to work with in any of our stops. If you have, bless you for picking up what can only be a second-job-worth of slack. And if you happen to work with him at a nuclear power plant, be sure you have good life insurance.
