The Charlotte York
Of the many people you enjoy working with day to day, few bring you the joy that Charlotte does. She brings the level of kindness and approachability in the most genuine way that assures you that she is simply a ‘good person’. You can’t always say that about everyone whose agenda or motives you sometimes question. Not so with Charlotte, who has never deviated from the sweetness and positivity that you saw on day one. You are aware that she has gone through painful moments, both personally and professionally, but always keeps her chin up. Similar life events you have seen topple lesser people, yourself included at the more severe times, but not Charlotte. She takes a lickin’ and keeps on tickin’, and it inspires you to be stronger and simply better at what you do and how you live your life. She is the model citizen and model worker that you feel lucky to have in your life.
The Mr. Big
Mr. Big is a pompous, overly confident executive that somehow makes you feel he is better than you just by passing by you in the hallway. He has never said a bad word to you, nor have you heard rumors about demeaning, condescending behavior of any kind. Yet with limited interaction, you feel that you know he is that way, and you find yourself smirking when you think of him, believing he is somewhere thinking he is better than everyone. Over time, you realize this is an unfair assessment based on nothing whatsoever, and as part of your own evolution as a professional, you try to be less judgmental, and give him a break. You also realize that he has no idea you feel this way and would be shocked to know you have this internal dialogue that has pitted you against him, which makes you laugh if he ever knew. After a few years you have come to respect him and believe that he must be where he is for good reason and trust that he is leading the company to success, which keeps you employed, and that is a good thing. You also feel better as your relationship has evolved to a much healthier place during that time. You assume that he is happy about that as well, until you realize he has no idea you two have a relationship.
The Miranda Hobbes
Miranda is a lot of work. She is uber-talented at her job, knows every aspect of her role and never misses a trick when it comes to work. As your HR lead, there is nothing you or anyone else can get by her. Making a mistake in front her behaviorally will bring lead to her popping by to counsel you and encourage you to make a better decision next time. You do feel that, due to her friendly approach, this conversation is off the record. But you know differently. There is nothing you discuss with Miranda that you assume is not recorded or transcribed in some file, somewhere. You only hope it does not surface when you look to switch jobs or go for a promotion. It is almost as though she holds all the cards to your future, and to some degree she does.
The Samantha Jones
Samantha is awesome to work with and to be around. She never disappoints in her ability to make you feel good, entertained, and often a little uneasy. She is happy to not only hug the line of office-appropriate, she simply obliterates it. Samantha’s confidence and comfort in her own skin is unlike anything you have seen. She knows who she is and goes about her work and her life unapologetically. She doesn’t suffer fools and has no patience for the overly-sensitive or politically correct, willing to call out superficiality and grandstanding wherever she sees it. You love Samantha for that and wish you had one tenth her courage in her convictions with her incredible presence and communication that allows her to say what she wants to say in a way that stuns some but offends few. Samantha is as talented in her role as you see in people running companies. Samantha however has more important things to focus on like her family and personal life that will only ever see her dedicating the necessary time to do her job well and no more. She seems to have it all figured out and you hope it continues to rub off on you.
The Carrie Bradshaw
As you think of people you feel you have seen grow up in the workplace, it is Carrie that has happily surprised you the most. You recall her starting with the company in a lower-level role years earlier and thought little about her. She seemed normal, smart, and you thought she’d be effective at her job and not much more. But you were wrong and have seen throughout your time together that she is far more than the role she has and is dedicated to being more than that. Her wonderful, funny, and genuine personality brings people closer to her, who then see that she has incredible talent, suited for much more, both professionally and creatively than you first imagined. You believe that she has learned a lot in this role, developing the skills needed to do this work, and about being an adult and a professional. Carrie will move on soon enough. She will see in herself what you see, which is that she is a bird that cannot be caged and will ultimately spread her wings and do something special with her life. You only hope that your friendship endures so that you can have a front row seat to whatever she does next.
