Characters We Work With – Star Trek
The Scotty
Scotty is the boss’ right hand man when it comes to anything he needs done in the moment. While not necessarily the most adept at everything the business does, he is dependable, easy to work with and never declines a request. He is prone to getting panicky through even less serious situations, and you believe he must be on some type of anxiety medication to manage it. He remains functional and good at his role, but you worry he will get an ulcer at some point if he can’t stay calm when things get sticky. But as a colleague you couldn’t ask for a better one. His pleasant demeanor and generally positive, albeit serious, attitude helps you all to stay focused on the mission, while enjoying your work day to day.
The Spock
If Scotty is the boss’ right hand, Spock would be CTO – Chief Technology Officer. In your business two groups determine the company’s success – it’s employees and your customers. It is also reliant on data to understand what happened in the past, know where you are today, and predict with as much accuracy as possible where you will be tomorrow. There is no better person to crunch those numbers than Spock. You assume he either has a supercomputer for a brain or works a calculator like The Flash. But his ability to run data analysis on the spot to help guide the boss and the team with what outcomes are possible based on the completion of various actions and strategies is like nothing you’ve ever seen. You sometimes wonder if he’s even human. He also has a depth of knowledge of the business and displays a level of wisdom that at times seems otherworldly. You take every opportunity to join Spock on projects and company trips, because you know that the more time you spend with him, the better and wiser you will be. You have never seen him laugh, and are never sure if he enjoys his work, as he is as deadpan and expressionless as they come. Still, being around him is never stale, boring or unhappy. For a man of few words, the wisdom and knowledge he imparts is as infectious as the office funny guy’s comedy, and makes you realize that learning can truly be fun, particularly when you sense you are in the presence of genius.
The Uhura
Uhura is vital to the staff, and a go to person for all things employee relations. When there is a conflict between employees, or discipline needs to be doled out, Uhura is called in to assist, and often mediate as positive a resolution as can be done. She is a master communicator, not only able to speak multiple languages, but she is able to relate to everyone no matter the situation. Each of the managers, many of your colleagues lean on Uhura as a sounding board, or psychiatrist, as much as their employee relations lead. It doesn’t matter the request or the need, Uhura is up for it. She is willing to listen to support and to give the guidance that people need to hear to move forward, proving her indispensability to the team.
The McCoy
McCoy is a throwback as compared to most of the management team. He is a long-time veteran of the industry with a brilliant mind to boot. He doesn’t always keep that mind open as much as he could, showing an inherent mistrust for new people, and for change in general. You have seen that while slow to get there, he is always ultimately able to get himself there. Thankfully, once there, he knows how to get the best out of people, who in turn admire him for what he is able to impart to them and help their development. He has a unique relationship with the boss, who trusts his advice, but gave up years earlier thinking McCoy would actually treat him like a boss. McCoy is not rude or insubordinate, but he pulls no punches, and if he disagrees, he bluntly tells the boss that he’s wrong. Few have the cache to pull that off more than once. You wonder if McCoy is close to retirement having spent a long career already by the time you came to work with him, but while he is closing in on retirement age, nothing about his work or his mind suggests he will move on any time soon. It could also be that he is so stubborn that he may work forever just to prove that he can.
The Captain Kirk
Kirk is the leader of your department, and you are glad to have him. While he has not been around as long as many of your colleagues, it is clear what people saw in Kirk to appoint him to the role. He displays wisdom beyond his years with an innate ability to know what to do in every situation. He approaches his work and his team with the same level of care most have for their family. Kirk was given the post with the belief that the business would complete its mission to be successful, generate consistent revenue, and would care for all customers and employees at every turn. He has never disappointed. You have people in your life you say would take a bullet for you, and despite Kirk not being a family member, and not really as close to you as he is his immediate team, you sense that he would take that bullet for you just as he would for everyone around you. There is nothing that seems to ever come between him and his team, and he’s shown time and again that he will do everything to protect you all and make you successful. He’s a true leader in every sense.
