Characters We Work With – The Honeymooners
The Alice Kramden
Alice is your classic ‘Hot Ticket’ as your mother may have said years ago. She has an irascible sense of humor and extreme self-confidence in who she is and what her capabilities are. She stays within her role, seldom deviating from the norm and routine, and you find that level of predictability a comfort. She can be relied upon at every turn, and you always know that giving her an assignment or working with her on a project, you will get her best, because she does not allow herself, and those working with her, to fail. She has a keen sense for those who are disingenuous and has zero tolerance for it. And you have seen on many occasions where she simply, bluntly calls it out for what it is. Thus, she has helped to create a no nonsense, straightforward approach to work that others heed. You are grateful for Alice, because you never have to be the heavy or the bad guy, knowing that she will fulfill that role and keep everyone in line which helps everyone to complete their work at a high level and on time.
The Ed Norton
Ed is a good guy. He’s a loyal friend to all, and everyone genuinely likes him. He is far from the best worker, and nothing about him suggests he really knows well what he is doing. He is marginally competent with the work he has, and never able to do much more than complete the minimum of his workload. During quiet periods in work, and through lunch and break times, is where Ed proves his extensive value. He is funny, light-hearted, and a joy to be around. He can turn a tough day around with jokes and a bit of slapstick comedy that always makes you laugh but will never make you think. It’s not his forte, and neither you nor the group count on him to be that. You sometimes wonder how he’s managed to survive for so long, but after working with him long enough you see the intrinsic value of someone who can keep morale high, keep people connected to one another, even if his work is just average….or a hair below average.
The Trixie Norton
Trixie is the person who quietly goes about her work, and seldom says anything outside its scope. She is sweet, kind to everyone, but never engages unless you engage her first. She is not unapproachable by any means and is actually quite friendly. But it is not her way to proactively offer that side, as she is there to work, and handle whatever comes her way. She is perfectly okay with not being part of the popular crowd, and not being looked at for future advancement opportunities. She has a life to lead, family to care for, and her work here is the means to that end. While people ask her to join them for lunch or come out after work for a drink before heading home, Trixie passes every time. She would rather do something constructive during lunch, and after work is home time. To alter that routine would be neglecting her responsibilities on the home front, and that won’t happen. Thankfully, Trixie treats her work and her home with the same dedication and in both spots is counted on and gets it all done every time.
The Mrs. Manicotti
Mrs. Manicotti doesn’t work in your department but is heard from and referenced often enough to feel like she is a regular in your group. You will see people coming back into the office or your work area and share how they were just talking to Mrs. Manicotti, or she will be part of a conference call you are on, as you wonder who she is and what she looks like having never actually met her. You once thought you caught a glimpse of her on a video call, but it was an avatar, which if is based on her, she is stunning. But you don’t know for sure, and may never know. Thankfully, all of your experience with Mrs. Manicotti, which are either via third hand information or the sound of her voice on a call, have been positive. You are not quite sure who she is, what she does, and where in the building she goes each day, but Mrs. Manicotti is among those mysterious people who seem to be in the mix on a lot of things, even if you are not sure she really exists.
The Ralph Kramden
Ralph is a solid employee, hovering within the entry level ranks for a long time, and fully content to be there for as long as the company lets him. He is not untalented, nor unmotivated. He works hard and earns every penny of his paycheck. While you have seen the workforce evolve through the years, Ralph is a throwback who treats the boss with more respect than he often deserves. But Ralph doesn’t see it like that, and no matter the boss’ transgressions or shortcomings, Ralph respects the title and thus will always go along with decisions and never cross the boss. Ralph is also a good time, he can be a bit loud, tell you a joke, be demonstrative when he talks, and will do a lot of flailing about as he rips into a good story. But he will be the first to tone it down and cut the story short when the boss pops by. It makes you laugh when Ralph turtles back into his shell, but it is part of his charm and among the reasons his presence always bring a smile to your face.
