The Seth Bullock
Seth is your rising star in the workplace, driven, honest, and has seen enough to have furthered his education about business and office politics. He inserts himself into the conversation for senior level management to stand up and take notice of his talent and his drive. He is incredibly smart, and tactical, able to help the business develop and execute on strategies that resonate with people and give the decision-makers pause to realize his brilliance. Seth also has the willingness to get his hands dirty. He’ll not just throw out ideas for others to cultivate and implement. Seth is willing to see his ideas through from start to finish and has done so a number of times. He should be even further up the ladder than he is if not for some nervousness among those above him who know that if they give him the key to the executive washroom it won’t be long before they are reporting to Seth. But he’s an unstoppable force and will get there in spite of those who stand in his way.
The Calamity Jane
Jane is ahead of her time. She’s been in business a long time, has pushed through many a glass ceiling and is the inspiration to those around the office who have found the strength and perseverance to jump any hurdles that people choose to put in front of them. Jane has immense talent and a brilliant intellect, able to match wits and talk business with those running the company. She understands what big picture thinking is all about and knows the value of transparency as well as how to translate a vision to every level in a way that motivates others to get behind it. Jane is every bit the worker-bee as well, willing to do the dirty work that takes projects and initiatives over the finish line with quality and budget always intact. Jane knows that successful business is driven on strong relationships and there are few who have developed and maintained great relationships within their team and across organizations better than Jane.
The Molly Parker
Molly is a good worker and consistent in her behavior, her approach, and in her results. You know what to expect from Molly behaviorally, although she is not above the brooding period if things are not going well in her personal or professional life. Thankfully, these episodes are rare, and people can count on what they’ll get from Molly. She is pleasant, approachable and very smart. When motivated, she can do her job as well as anyone, and thankfully she is motivated most of the time. Molly does enjoy attention and a good compliment when she can get it, not above fishing for it to help her feel good and get a quick boost of confidence. You don’t care for that aspect of Molly so much, but it is thankfully the exception not the rule with her. You are glad to have Molly on your team because you value quality work and good people above all else, and why you hope only for good things for Molly in her career. And if she can develop a good strategy that helps her balance her work and personal life, she has a chance to go far in business.
The Dayton Callie
In many circles, Dayton is referred to as a ‘fixer’, and in others he may be called a buffoon. When you need something done or need to find out a juicy piece of information, Dayton is a guy who is able to get it done. He is a lower-level employee, and you figure he must do a decent enough job to keep it this long, but you’re not really sure. Your projects and general scope of work doesn’t cross often enough with Dayton’s for you to know for sure. Thus, you assume the best. But it is his side job as ‘the person to talk to when…’, for which he is far better known. You are not aware of who his closest allies are and suspect that it may be because he has no one willing to be close enough to him to get hurt or backstabbed with some piece of information he may pass along throughout the office. You maintain a good enough relationship with Dayton to get what you need when you need it. You are vigilant about what you say and do in his presence knowing that it won’t be long before rumors about you spread around the place should you fall out of favor with him.
Al Swearengen
If Dayton is looked at as a fixer, he has nothing on the Master Fixer, Al Swearengen. Al runs a big operation within the company, and everyone assumes that he bullied his way to the top, whether through blackmail or brute force. He is clearly brilliant with a tremendous mind for business, and you see that it is only business, money, and power that drives him. He has little patience for people, and while he’s obviously learned a lot about business, he never applies it to developing good relationships. He does have many strong relationships, but they are all based on what the other can do for Al. Those who can’t or won’t, are not around Al, or around the office for that matter, for very long. Staying on Al’s good side is paramount to your success, and you thus do as much as needed to stay on that side without fully compromising your principles. You have to believe that Al will someday get lonely when he realizes that he has no real relationships at work and probably at home, only those based on fear and business reciprocity. But you know that such an epiphany is unlikely, as Al has proven more than most to be who he is and seems ever unchangeable.
