Senior Paralegal

The Windows + Devices CELA (Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs) team is looking for an Senior Paralegal to support Microsoft’s Devices business. The Devices team develops and builds our Surface line of tablets, laptops, large screen products, and accessories, as well as manufacturing Xbox consoles and accessories. The paralegal in this role will work closely with attorneys on the Windows + Devices CELA team, and will work directly with engineers, product managers, and other business partners on a wide variety of topics, including product development, Intellectual Property (IP) licensing and protection, product safety, and sustainability.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s Degree AND 4+ years experience in paralegal, legal administration, or relevant area
    • OR 7+ years experience in paralegal, legal administration, or relevant area.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree AND 7+ years experience in paralegal, legal administration, or relevant area.
  • 5+ years relevant in-house experience.

Paralegal IC3 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $72,800 – $144,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $95,100 – $157,900 per year.

Responsibilities:
Legal Knowledge and Support

  • Provides comprehensive support to attorneys and other department roles on complex legal matters.
  • Maintains extensive knowledge of the applicable legal framework (e.g., court rules, legal deadlines, patents), laws, regulations, and industry policies within department specialty area.
  • Conducts legal research independently and analyzes data from various sources (e.g., spreadsheets, reports, online data).
  • Drafts, processes, negotiates, and reviews legal documents and correspondence for complex legal matters.
  • Reviews complex business materials (e.g., marketing collateral, proposals, requests for proposals) and programs for compliance with applicable laws and Microsoft internal policies.
  • Finalizes production of reports and other necessary materials for department activities.
  • Requests materials from attorneys, clients, third parties, outside counsel, and/or company personnel.
  • Maintains knowledge of Microsoft’s business, CELA processes, and Microsoft policies.
  • Trains and mentors legal specialists and paralegals.

Operational Excellence

  • Develops, masters use of, and encourages others to adopt company tools, resources, databases, and processes related to one’s practice area to efficiently achieve work objectives and recommends ways to improve efficiency.
  • Sets and adapts priorities for one’s own work and determines work that can be discontinued or performed more efficiently.
  • Works in alignment with priorities established for practice group.
  • Communicates and coordinates with outside counsel to manage or modify schedules and deadlines.

Client Counseling

  • Acts as the primary legal contact for business clients and complex questions.
  • Makes recommendations and provides support to clients on moderately complex legal matters based on comprehensive understanding of the client’s business and subject matter.
  • Conducts meetings with attorneys, business clients, and outside counsel on routine or assigned matters at the direction of an attorney.
  • Prepares presentations and coordinates communication across one’s practice area and/or CELA to ensure full alignment and consensus on client solutions.
  • Counsels clients, resolves conflicts, and provides status updates on issues under some attorney direction.
  • Develops and proposes resolutions to the attorney that enable clients to take action towards achieving business objectives.

Projects and Initiatives

  • Leads and demonstrates accountability for small projects within practice group and/or on parts of larger projects outside of practice group.
  • Recommends new programs or processes in response to a business change (e.g., vendor vetting) to meet business needs.
