Minority Deputy Communications Director (Democrat Caucus)

Position Summary

The Ohio House Democratic Caucus is seeking a creative and motivated deputy communication director. This individual will serve as a crucial part of our legislative communications team that leads, develops and manages the message, media and public information of the Democratic caucus.

The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal communications skills; a proven ability to balance multiple priorities simultaneously in a complex environment; writing, analytical, visual and verbal skills; an interest and passion for Democratic politics; and a strong understanding of media, the state legislature and public communication strategies.

Flexibility and a willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends is necessary.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Assists lawmakers and their offices with press planning, media writing and disseminating public information.
  • Identify earned media opportunities on behalf of members and the Minority Caucus.
  • Writes news releases, speeches, talking points, messaging copy.
  • Assists with staff communication training and skill building.
  • Helps advance a dynamic communication strategy that brings the House Democratic message to the public and engages target audiences.

Reporting Relationship

  • Reports to the Minority Director of Communications, Minority Chief of Staff
  • Works closely with minority caucus staff, legislative aides

Schedule

Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree or two years of relevant legislative experience

Qualifications
Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and 1 year of relevant work experience.
  • Strong writing and copyediting ability with sound editorial judgement and knowledge of AP Style.
  • Ability to remain professional and focused on deadlines.
  • Strong project management skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work quickly and independently in a fast-paced environment while juggling multiple projects with competing timelines.
  • Understanding of social media platforms, trends and best practices.
  • Enthusiastic and proactive with excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and the ability to work in a flexible environment.
