The City of Pasadena Water and Power Department (PWP), Power Delivery Engineering Transmission & Distribution group is looking for an Engineering Technician to perform technical assignments ranging in difficulty from routine to moderate in support of PWP’s engineering design and construction projects and activities.

Employees in this class typically report to an Electrical Engineer or an Associate Electrical Engineer and may receive work assignments and instructions from lower-level professional engineers.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have strong technical knowledge of AutoCAD software and an understanding of engineering methods and practices.

Essential Functions

  • Using basic engineering design concepts and AutoCAD software, assists engineers by preparing preliminary design and engineering construction drawings for a variety of standard facilities and improvements.
  • Performs calculations; refers to existing facility data and design standards to verify the accuracy and completeness of project data; resolves discrepancies through research or field checks; researches easements and utility locations.
  • Prepares exhibits, tables, maps and other materials requested by assigned project engineers; produces plans and maps for consultants and contractors; prepares traffic control plans in accordance with City standards for construction projects.
  • Prepares as-built drawings following construction; reviews digital redlines, survey data and inspector field mark-ups and notes; enters new as-built data in the facilities database; reviews and corrects existing facilities data associated with the project.
  • Performs field checks when necessary to determine conflicts with City facilities; interprets drawings for sewer, storm drains, traffic signal, water, power and other facilities.
  • Sets conditions, calculates fees and issues permits for construction projects in the public right of way; responds to requests for copies of plans and provides information on the location of City facilities.
  • Assists engineers in preparing designs and engineering construction drawings for overhead and underground distribution facilities and systems including: customer/private property vaults; transformer, cable and switch installations/replacements; 4 KV to 17 KV conversions; substation layouts; and other equipment and facilities upgrade and replacement projects; calculates transformer loads; updates circuit maps based on redline drawings; creates, edits archives and distributes drawings including electrical schematics, wiring diagrams and control diagrams; assembles Bills of Materials for associated construction projects; coordinates with supervisors and project managers to arrange for required survey and inspection work.
  • Assists engineers in issuing work orders and maintaining construction work order databases; creates, updates and closes Project Job Order (PJO) documents and records.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, supplemented by college-level course work in engineering technology, drafting, engineering mathematics or related fields and
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in performing sub-professional engineering duties; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience in a public agency is preferred.
  • An Associate’s degree is preferred.
  • Knowledge and ability to use AutoCAD and Microsoft Office software.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process will consist of a training and experience evaluation and may also include one or more of the following: written exam, interview panel, department level interview, AutoCAD assessment, and/or online assessment.
The probationary work period for this classification is 12 months and is part of the Non-represented salary resolution.

Special Requirements
Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license and comply with the City’s Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment.

Effective January 1, 2013, new members to CalPERS or an agency with CALPERS’ reciprocity or who have more than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPER (or reciprocal) agency will be subject to the provisions of the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) and will receive the 2% @ 62 benefit formula.

Employees who are current members of CalPERS or an agency with CalPERS’ reciprocity, or who have less than a six month break in service between employment in a CalPERS (or reciprocal) agency and employment with the City will be enrolled in the 2.5% @ 55 benefit formula.

All employees are required to pay the full employee contribution to CalPERS.
