What you’ll do:
Paralegal III will be responsible for managing various contested and escalated matters in the mortgage lending and servicing space including, but not limited to, pre-litigation disputes, lawsuits, reviewing legal documents and facilitating implementation of appropriate and timely courses of action that effectively resolve matters and limit exposure. Perform all duties in accordance with the company’s policies and procedures, all US state and federal laws and regulations, wherein the company operates. The target pay range for this position is $71,000.00 to $92,000.00.
What you’ll do:
- Supervise, support, and strategize with outside counsel retained to assist with specialized legal services across all 50 states.
- Assist in reviewing pleadings prepared by outside counsel, including but not limited to, summons, complaints, affidavits, answers, motions, orders and judgments.
- Assist in reviewing and preparing discovery responses and objections, timely obtaining executed verifications, and reviewing proposed redactions. Locate knowledgeable persons to help develop responses to interrogatories and other discovery requests.
- Assist in reviewing and preparing subpoena responses.
- Review and prepare responses to various written correspondence received in relation to contested matters.
- Open and maintain files in case management system, including but not limited to, analyzing complaints, investigating claims, and providing outside counsel with requisite loan servicing and origination record.
- Assist outside counsel with securing key personnel for mediations, depositions, and other events that require personal/telephonic appearance.
- Maintain calendar for events requiring appearance by key personnel and key deadlines.
- Facilitate resolutions by gathering and organizing data and information needed for settlement, preparing requests for settlement approval, requesting settlement payments, reviewing settlement agreements and releases, and circulating agreements for signature.
- Take lead in pre-claim title investigation/review, including reviewing title records, organizing documents and creating a chronology of facts, preparing and submitting written claims, securing response from insurer and preparing memos regarding submission of and response to claim and proposed course of further action.
- Serves as liaison between outside counsel internal departments when necessary and appropriate.
- Work closely with business unit leaders in the tasks of responding to discovery, developing strategies, and resolving pre-litigation and litigation matters.
- Provide business units with monthly status of pending litigation, contested matters, or remediation of title issues as necessary.
- Resolve routine legal issues under the direction of an attorney.
- Preparation and maintenance of litigation reports as needed.
- Review and approve outside counsel budgets and monthly invoices
What you’ll need:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
- Ten (10) plus years of experience as a corporate paralegal within the mortgage banking/servicing industry focusing on litigation and dispute management
- Experience reviewing, identifying and handling legal matters specific to the mortgage banking and servicing industries required.
- Paralegal certification preferred.
- Previous experience managing outside counsel costs.
