Job Summary:
The University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) is embarking on an exciting mission of establishing state of the art computational, data and informatics infrastructure for supporting cutting edge biomedical research and innovation to care. We are seeking a High Performance Computing (HPC) Engineer to join our Informatics team and help us design, develop, and deploy highly complex research computing and computational science workflows that support researchers. Join now and participate in the creation of this new platform that leverages both on premise and cloud-based computing and storage. Successful candidates will also help researchers scale their data science and computational workflows from small to large scale datasets.
This DevOps Engineer position will be housed within School of Medicine and Public Health and will report to the Senior Director Research Computing.
Strong people and communication skills are required. The ideal candidate is curious, self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision. Qualifications:
Required:
– Minimum 1 year professional experience designing, implementing and maintaining hybrid high performance computing environments for big data analytics
– Experience with modern programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Go, Java or Ruby)
– Experience with HPC system cluster management tools (e.g., Slurm)
– Experience with HPC storage (FC, SAS) principles and managing distributed file systems (e.g., Lustre, GlusterFS, Ceph)
– Familiarity with shared and distributed memory parallelism (OpenMP, MPI) and GPUs
– Familiarity with low-latency/high-bandwidth, interconnected infrastructure (e.g., Infiniband)
– Excellent oral and written communication skills
Preferred:
– Experience with HPC for omics
– Experience with Agile or Scrum methodology and tools
– Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CICD) pipelines
– Experience managing resources in a Public Cloud (e.g., Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Platform)
– Professional experience in automation, configuration management, package/patch management, and monitoring using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools (e.g., Terraform, Chef, Puppet, Ansible, Salt)
– Experience with regulatory or security regulations, controls and benchmarks like HIPAA, NIST 800-53 and CIS
– Experience with container and container orchestration solutions like Docker and Kubernetes

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
