Summary

Job experience is not always necessary, but applicants must display a good work ethic, a sense of teamwork, and a willingness to help strengthen our community and foster human development through the exciting field of parks and recreation. Afterschool Counselors implement assigned daily activities and supervise students ranging from kindergarten through fifth grade.

This position is well suited for someone with a pleasant personality who works well with children and understands children’s developmental skills and abilities. This position reports to the Afterschool Program Supervisor.

Essential Functions

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Executes age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate activities that are progressive and challenging for those in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.
  • Maintains constant supervision of students throughout all activities, including structured and unstructured play.
  • Assist program leadership team in planning, organize, and implement curriculum activities and projects. Lead activities and engage with all students.
  • Models appropriate behavior and uses positive behavior management techniques.
  • Perform student pick up responsibilities using ePACT records system. Follow sign in/out procedures ensuring all policies are followed.
  • Maintain and submit program records including, but not limited to, attendance reports, accident reports, payroll, supply lists, parent letters, and participant forms.Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school staff to maintain order and safety at the afterschool program site.
  • Provides families with relevant information regarding their student(s), intended to provide support to families.
  • Attend staff meetings and in-service training.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and secure environment for participants.
  • Assist in maintaining an adequate level of supplies and properly use equipment. Assist in maintaining first aid kits, and report if there are any shortages in supplies.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
  • Have previous experience with face-to-face program delivery or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities (preferred) .
  • Basic knowledge of children’s games and recreation activities;
    • Effective oral communication skills;
    • Ability to enforce safety rules;
    • Ability to lead physical, recreational, and leisure activities;
    • Ability to exercise maturity and good judgment.
  • Ability to successfully complete and maintain certifications (provided by the organization):
    • Illinois Mandated Reporter Training (online yearly training);
    • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED with Epi/Asthma certification (blended learning; every two years);
    • Illinois Food Handler Certification (online every three years).
  • Competence in using electronic devices (mobile phones, tablets, timekeeping clocks, etc.) and subsequent programs, apps, or websites with minimal instruction.
  • Ability to work flexible days, Monday – Friday, with flexible hours that will fall between 1:45 – 6:00 PM
  • Complete all online pre-program training and attend staff training date (subject to change)
    • August 11, 2023 | 1:30 – 6 pm

Ability to effectively communicate with fellow staff, program participants, parents, and the Site Supervisor.

Mathematical Ability
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, and calculate percentages, fractions, and decimals.

Judgment and Situational Reasoning Ability
Ability to interpret and carry out instructions furnished in written and oral form. Ability to exercise independent judgment regarding adopting or modifying methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

Ability to exercise sound judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against measurable criteria.

Physical Requirements
Ability to coordinate eyes, hands, feet, and limbs while performing movements requiring skill and training.

Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include climbing stairs, walking, crouching, crawling, stooping, bending, twisting, standing, or sitting for extended periods of time, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

Ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials, and tasks.

Must be able to physically lead activities and fieldtrips.

Environmental Adaptability
Ability to work under generally safe conditions where exposure to environmental factors such as sunlight, rain, cloudiness, heat, cold, and wind may cause some discomfort.

Ability to work independently and complete daily activities under little supervision.

Ability to work, at times, with angry or irate individuals.
