Job Summary:

The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. One of 15 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, clinics, a preschool, a brain imaging center, and a clinical biomanufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early stage human clinical trials. In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.

This position will serve as a public health record abstractor on the Wisconsin Surveillance of Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities System (WISADDS) project, a project funded as part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network. WISADDS is a public health project that conducts population-based, multi-source surveillance of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) among children in a 10- county area of southeastern Wisconsin. WISADDS adheres to a surveillance methodology developed by CDC involving screening and abstraction of data from records at multiple sources. There are no client and/or family interactions in this position.

Responsibilities:

Assists with the analysis and interpretation of collected data and drafts reports to develop and communicate research findings.

  • 80% Analyzes data and summarizes research results for a defined research area or study by utilizing established processes
  • 5% Prepares reports and manuscripts and assists with the development and presentation of materials through various communication platforms
  • 10% Maintains organization of research records and responds to data requests and inquiries
  • 5% Serves as an initial point of contact for individuals and groups providing basic information about result analysis and methodologies, answers questions as needed

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development, Psychology, Special Education, Public Health, Social Work, or a field related to development disabilities

Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will have the following required experience:
– Previous work experience (or academic preparation) in Child Development, Psychology, Special Education, Public Health, Social Work or a related area.

Well-qualified candidates will have the following preferred experience:
– Knowledge of developmental disabilities and intellectual disabilities (e.g., autism spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, etc.)
– Previous experience working with computerized data collection and familiarity with medical and/or special education records is highly preferred.
– Experience using Research Electronic Data Capture (REDCap) and Epic systems electronic health records.
– Excellent typing and computer skills as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) is highly preferred.
– Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, exceptional attention to detail and strong work ethic.
– Experience adhering to a project or study protocol.
– Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Must complete HIPAA and receive certification within the first 5 days of employment and annually thereafter within 5 days of notification.
