Role description:

In this role you will assist our growing Traffic & ITS engineering group in Nashville.

Role accountabilities:

  • Maintain a strong familiarity of the ICM, understanding its operations, maintenance, constraints, and limitations.
  • Inspect and monitor assigned ICM projects to ensure compliance with TDOT’s specifications, standards, and codes; review equipment submittals; review contractors’ monthly pay requests and adjust any items inconsistent with actual work performed.
  • Manage the ICM freeway operations (Lane Control System (LCS), Variable Speed Limits (VSL), Ramp Meters, etc.) by directing and coordinating activities consistent with the established goals, objectives, and policies according to the respective SOGs.
  • Enter incident information for the ICM into TDOT SmartWay Central Software and follow standard operating procedures to dispatch, monitor, and document roadway incidents.
  • Operate all ITS devices in the Region TMC using computer-based traffic management systems and employ these tools to manage traffic and incidents on roadways, provide accurate roadway information to the public, and improve the TSM&O network for all users.
  • Operate various TSM&O systems (i.e., VSL, LCS, express lanes; ramp metering; dynamic merge).
  • Maintain advanced knowledge on the operation of all ITS equipment, computers, and software associated with the Region TMC systems.
  • Utilize ITS equipment for incident management and the improvement of travel time, safety, and quality of service for the traveling motorists and toll customers.
  • Is aware of, and continually checks the accuracy and validity of the messages displayed on all DMSs and 511.
    • Provide real time traveler information on Dynamic Message Signs (DMS).
  • Manage special event operations as directed by TDOT.
  • Cooperate with Region TMC partners (THP, TDOT, HELP Operators, Local Law Enforcement, Fire Rescue, etc.) as well as Emergency Operations Centers, adjacent TMCs and other TDOT Districts to coordinate resources for incidents.
  • Relay incident and roadway information to other TDOT departments and coordinate with Asset Maintenance staff to respond to roadway events.
  • Monitor the status of traffic signal and system operations, corridor congestion, and traffic flow, etc. by technology tools including advanced traffic management systems, travel time monitoring, and CCTV cameras.
  • Support staff in identifying traffic congestion along the arterial network, based on pre-defined performance measures, while implementing pre-defined traffic mitigation measures in a timely manner.
  • Use asset management system for project devices to monitor, log tickets, and update maintenance statuses.
  • Provide ongoing system monitoring and reporting of the ICM including but not limited to:
    • Detector diagnostics.
    • Centracs central traffic management software reporting.
    • Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM).
    • Monthly preventive maintenance checks.
    • Weekly checks of equipment communication status.
    • Region Integrated Transportation Information System (RITIS) analysis / BlueTOAD analysis.
    • Monitor incidents and log using SmartWay Central Software (SWCS)

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications

  • 4 or more years’ experience working as a traffic management center specialist in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience operating TDOT’s SmartWay Central Software
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex issues in plain language verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work with peers, superiors, and subordinates in an office and field environment.
  • Ability to drive automobiles and small trucks, with a valid Tennessee Driver’s License.
  • Pass client-performed background security check and maintain ability to work within client facility, if applicable.

Key Attributes:

  • Customer service experience.
  • Good written and verbal communications skills.
  • Currently located in or willing to relocate to Nashville TN.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an associated field
  • Knowledge and ability to operate Signal Control Central Software (e.g., Centracs).
  • IMSA Transportation Center System Specialist Level I
    • An understanding of key concepts and the technology used for devices, equipment, and software that a TMC may utilize in daily operations.
    • Knowledge of data collection, manual and automatic incident detection, telecommunications, sub-systems, video, operations and control, network topology and security, wired and wireless physical plant, computer aided dispatching and analysis/reporting.

Arcadis offers benefits for full time positions. We offer seven paid holidays and potentially up to two floating holidays per calendar year depending on start, and 15 days PTO that accrue per year. The salary range for this position is $52000 – $78000 / year.
