Fitness Leader – Summer Semester

About the Department/Unit

AU’s Recreational Sports and Fitness (RecFit) is part of the Athletics Department and responsible for the operations and maintenance of the university’s fitness center as well as the operations of the university’s Competitive Sports division, which includes Club and Intramural Sports.

Summary/Objective

The Fitness Leader assists RecFit in the operations and maintenance of the university’s fitness center with the primary objective to ensure safety and inclusivity for the members and staff.

To achieve this object, the fitness leader is required to:

  • Actively monitor the members within the fitness center.
  • Responsibly manage all safety hazards.
  • Inform members about programs and activities.
  • Provide guidance and instruction pertaining to exercise form and equipment.
  • Enforce all fitness center policies.

The fitness leader is also responsible for preventative maintenance and cleaning of the fitness facility and equipment, which includes dry mopping the group exercise studios, wiping down equipment and railings, sweeping/vacuuming the floors, and organizing the equipment.

During each shift, the fitness leader is expected to promote wellbeing and inclusivity by acknowledging and interacting with the members, as well as report inappropriate language and/or behavior.

Essential Functions

The Fitness Leader assists RecFit in the operations and maintenance of the university’s fitness centers by:

  1. Actively monitoring the facility and ensuring safety of all members.
  2. Enforcement of Fitness Center Policies and safety requirements.
  3. Offering members assistance and guidance with exercise activities and use of the equipment.
  4. Providing excellent customer service to the members, which includes providing information about RecFit programs and services.
  5. Cleaning and performing preventive maintenance on fitness equipment and facility.
  6. Creating an inclusive environment for the AU Community and its members.

Work Environment

The Fitness Leader position works on the fitness floor at either the Jacobs or Cassell Fitness Centers. The gym floor is busy with members exercising with equipment, especially during peak hours.

  • Shifts are typically 2-3 hours each.
  • The Fitness Centers open at 6am and close at 12am during the week.
  • The Fitness Leader is required to be able to lift pieces of equipment that weigh 50 lbs.
  • The Fitness Leader must be able to remain present on the gym floor at all times and enforce the fitness center policies as well as provide information and customer service to members.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

The Fitness Centers open at 6am and close at 12am during the week and open at 8am and close at 6pm on the weekends. Shifts are typically 2-3 hours long and each Fitness Leader is expected to work at least 2 shifts per week. Plus, each Fitness Leader needs to be available to work either one opening shift or one closing shift.

Employment Period: Semester-based

Hour of Work Requirements and Limitations: On average the fitness leader will be scheduled to work for approximately 6-12 hours per week. Each fitness leader is required to work a minimum of 2 hours per week and a maximum of 28 hours per week (20 hours per week for international students).

Availability Requirements: All fitness leaders must be available to work at least one opening or one closing shift per week.

Facility Hours: M-Th 6am-12am, F 6am-9:30pm, Sat 8:30-6:30pm, Sun 10:30-10:30pm during the Fall and Spring Semesters and M-Th 6:30am-9pm, F 6:30am-8:30pm, Sat & Sun 9-5pm during the Summer Semester.

Salary Range

$16.10 per hour.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

The Fitness Leader position is open to both FWS and non-FWS candidates.

The Fitness Leader must be enrolled in classes at the start of the semester.

The Fitness Leader must complete Onboarding before starting work and participate in all mandatory staff trainings during the semester.
