Arraignment Courtroom Clerk (District of Columbia Court Agency Employees Only)

Summary

The Arraignment Courtroom Clerk supports the operations of the Criminal Division and is permanently assigned to the Criminal Arraignment Courtroom. The Arraignment Courtroom Clerk is an essential position that is required to work late hours, holidays, weekends and when there are weather related closures. This position covers a high volume calendar by which speed and attention to detail are necessary in order to be successful.

Clarification from the agency

All eligible District of Columbia Courts Agency Employees (refer to Policy 0210 and 0200). While the DC Courts has a telework policy, eligibility is determined by the respective division where the position is situated within the agency.

Duties

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • Assembles all cases to be heard by the court prior to the judge taking the bench.
  • Records court proceedings and decisions on official court documents.
  • Administers oaths to witnesses and impanels juries.
  • Prepares judicial summonses, bench warrants, arrest warrants and other legal documents as directed by a judge.
  • Identifies and accounts for exhibits.
  • Advises defendants of rights and penalties for violation of conditions of release.
  • Manages the courtroom and performs administrative support as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or GED plus three (3) years of administrative or clerical experience in a court, legal or office environment; or an Associate’s degree plus (1) years of administrative or clerical experience in a court, legal or office environment

Bachelor’s Degree in criminal justice, public or business administration, liberal arts, or a related degree; Some familiarity with the criminal judicial system, judicial branch or legal terminology is preferred.

    The DC Courts leave policy is as follows:

    Annual Leave: New full-time employees earn four (4) hours of annual leave biweekly. After three years of service this increases to six (6)hours biweekly, and at 15 years it increases to eight(8)hours biweekly. Most military, federal and District of Columbia government service counts toward the time required to go into the next higher annual leave category. Employees can carry over no more than 240 hours of annual leave into the next leave year.

    Sick Leave is used for personal medical needs, care of a family member, or adoption related purposes. Full-time employees earn four(4)hours of sick leave biweekly. This leave can be accrued without limit.

    In addition to the federal health plans, the DC Courts offer employees supplemental vision and dental plans as well as a commuter transit benefit subsidy, for a maximum of $150 a month. There are 26 pay periods in the year.
