Job Summary:
The Police Officer is a sworn law enforcement position under the general direction of a ranking officer or supervisor. Police Officers must be capable of providing a full range of law enforcement services. They enforce laws, investigate complaints, investigate incidents which may have an impact on the University, maintain order, assist people, identify criminal activity, apprehend and arrest offenders, identify the source of problems in the community and work with the community to resolve issues.

Responsibilities: Enforces laws, investigates complaints and incidents, maintains order, identifies criminal activity, and apprehends and arrest offenders to ensure safety and security on all institutional properties. This is a sworn law enforcement position under the general direction of a ranking officer or supervisor.

  • 20% Provides protection of life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community
  • 20% Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information
  • 20% Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws
  • 15% Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community
  • 10% Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others
  • 15% Required to work special events or assignments as designated by the Department.

Education:

You are required to have a minimum of 40 college credits by date of hire with expectation that you complete the Police Academy, sponsored by UW-Madison Police Department, to earn the 60 college credits required by the Department of Justice.
Qualifications:
-Previous protective service experience is not required and all employment and/or life experience will be considered.

-This position requires a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License with a minimum of 2 years driving experience within the United States and/or Canada.

-If you are not currently a Wisconsin certified law enforcement officer, you are required to have a minimum of 40 college credits by date of hire with expectation that you complete the police academy sponsored by UW-Madison Police Department to earn the 60 college credits required by the Department of Justice.

-Candidates must pass the initial application screening, all steps of the hiring process, an extensive background investigation including past employment, reference checks, social media check, credit history, drug screen, and medical and psychological examination prior to beginning employment.

If you are not currently a certified law enforcement officer you will be enrolled in a law enforcement academy and required to pass the required standards. The Department will cover the costs of attending the academy.
Work Schedule:
This position is considered an essential position for the University Campus. Schedules rotate based on a pre-determined first shift, second shift, or third shift schedule and includes working holidays and weekends. Work beyond or outside hours scheduled may be required during emergencies, special events or as assigned.

Previous law enforcement experience and currently law enforcement certified applicants will be considered for pay above the minimum posted.

Starting pay – $29.00
Year 1 – $30.59
Year 3 – $33.25
Year 5 – $34.55
Year 7 – $35.07

Applicants with higher education degrees may also receive an educational incentive pay of $1.00 per hour for an Associate Degree, $2.00 per hour of a Bachelor’s Degree and $3.00 for a Master’s or above degrees. Employees are eligible to apply for tuition reimbursement.
Additional Information:
The UW-Madison Police Department is pleased to offer a $2,000 hiring bonus for new full-time employees! The bonus is available to candidates hired in to police officer, security officer, and dispatcher positions. The $2,000 bonus will be paid in three phases over the course of the new hire’s first year of employment.
