Teaching Artist (Visual Arts and Media) – Part-time

About the Part-Time Teaching Artist Role:

BRIC seeks innovative and experienced Teaching Artists with an active creative practice in visual arts and/or media, for school day and afterschool media residencies in New York City public schools and community centers. BRIC works with over 40 schools serving 400 students Pre-K through high school, in the following fields: Printmaking, bookmaking, painting, murals, sculpture, site-specific installation, mosaic, public art, digital photography, textile, mixed media, video production, animation, digital photography and podcasting.

What You’ll Do in the Role:

Teaching Artists will be responsible for the following in addition to any other project as assigned by their manager, the Senior Manager, Residencies.

  • Implement student-centered arts residencies, using arts and media to build skills and increase student learning, engaging students through creative projects and lessons relevant to their academic studies, needs and learning styles.
  • Facilitate professional development workshops, media studio workshops, and family activities.
  • Each residency is unique, and is developed to meet the goals of BRIC and its partners.
  • Work alongside classroom teachers to integrate arts instruction into core studies that culminate in projects that are curated for our annual Student Exhibition and Youth Media Festival at BRIC House Gallery.
  • Work closely with BRIC staff and school partners to build relationships and determine program needs.
  • Customize curriculum to effectively integrate with educational goals and learning standards.
  • Facilitate workshops with students, teachers and parents during the school day and afterschool.
  • Maintain communication with residency partners and BRIC to report curriculum, activities, changes in program design, and assessment.
  • Coordinate transportation of materials and equipment as needed.
  • Complete projects, final reports, and curriculum in a timely manner.
  • Prepare student work for the annual BRIC student exhibition.

  • Experience & Qualifications:
    • Fluency in Spanish is required.
    • The ability to teach using arts-based vocabulary in Spanish is required.
    • Extensive experience teaching and working with textile arts, performance and media arts desired.
    • BA/BFA required, MA/MFA preferred.
    • Complete body of work representing personal artistic practice and exploration.
    • Commitment to youth development and community building, also commitment to supporting authentic youth voice and creative expression.
    • Prior teaching experience in NYC public school settings, curriculum development experience aligned with NYC Blueprint for Learning & Teaching in the Arts a plus.
    • Knowledge of art and/or film history, as well as contemporary art, film and culture.
    • Ability to connect visual arts/ media to contemporary issues.
    • Proficiency in a range of art materials and techniques.
    • Gallery exhibition and installation experience is a plus.
    • Proficiency in all aspects of the production and post-production process.
    • Strong technical skills and comfort working with current media-making technology (for Video Residencies, skills with HD Video, Adobe Premiere, and Final Cut Pro; for Digital Photography) a plus.
    • Skills with DSLR, and Photoshop; and for Animation Residencies, skills with iStopMotion or similar programs) a plus.

Other Things to Know:

  • Compensation: The hourly rates for this position are:
    • $70/hour for teaching.
    • $50/hour for planning.
    • $25/hour for meetings.
  • Status and location: This is a part-time position, fully onsite. Hours are contingent on residency requests.
