ABOUT THE POSITION:
The City of Santa Rosa is accepting applications to fill one current full-time vacant Facilities Attendant position. Facilities Attendants perform routine maintenance of City-owned buildings and grounds to ensure they are clean and in good repair, and to set up furniture and equipment for classes, programs and events.
THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE:

- Exceptional customer service skills and the proven ability to build and maintain positive, effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Basic custodial, facilities maintenance, or event set-up experience in a recreation or social environment with a high level of frequent public contact.
- Experience working with a diverse demographic
- The ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are highly desirable.

Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine and special cleaning of facilities as directed by verbal or written instructions;
- empty trash receptacles;
- check and replace paper products in the restrooms;
- remove fallen leaves using a rake, vacuum or blower;
- sweep sidewalks and entry areas;
- access daily work schedules and orders using a personal computer;
- assist with set-up and clean-up at special events;
- assist with more complex maintenance tasks requiring more than one person to perform, such as holding ladders and lifting heavy objects.
In addition to the above, the following duties are performed in the sections specified:
Recreation Centers:
- Set up and take down tables, chairs, audio-visual equipment and other related materials and equipment for routine and special classes, programs and events;
- make coffee and other beverages for visitor consumption;
- perform preventive maintenance, such as oiling and cleaning of exercise and kitchen equipment;
- respond to requests made by instructors, rental groups, or City staff for materials and equipment or reconfiguration of a room set-up;
- collect and count money and tickets at events;
- assist with crowd control;
- perform light carpentry and touch-up painting;
- act as a back-up for maintenance staff in the areas of watering plants, mowing lawns, and opening and closing buildings
Aquatic Facilities:
- Conduct water tests to check chlorine and PH levels of swimming pool water and record results;
- perform routine cleaning of pools, decks and surrounding areas;
- cover and uncover pools;
- install and remove lane lines;
- act as a back-up for maintenance staff in the area of mowing lawns;
- assist with installation and removal of specialized equipment
Required Qualifications
Knowledge of: Basic cleaning equipment, supplies, methods and materials. Some assignments may require the knowledge of hand tools used to perform light carpentry and minor maintenance.
Ability to: Use hand and yard tools such as a hammer, screwdriver, pliers, paint brush, drill, hand vacuum, mops, rakes, shovels, gas lawn mowers and/or brooms; work around visitors and others contacted in the course of work in a tactful, courteous, sensitive and amiable manner, even in situations where relationships may be strained; work in a safety conscious manner; read, understand and follow diagrams and written instructions; follow verbal instructions; work a flexible schedule, depending on department needs; access computer terminals using a keyboard; work from diagrams and schedules written on paper or a computer screen. Some assignments require the ability to operate a ¾ ton pick-up. For positions assigned to Recreation Centers, the ability to operate small power tools, learn to set up a variety of audio-visual equipment, and learn to operate kitchen and maintenance equipment such as an automatic food waste collector, a dishwasher and a wet and dry vacuum is also required. For positions assigned to Aquatic Facilities, ability to learn to perform basic water chemistry tests; and learn to operate basic pool maintenance equipment is also required.
Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Experience – Sufficient basic custodial, facilities maintenance, or event set-up experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed above. Experience performing this work in a recreation or social environment with high public contact is desirable.
License: This classification requires the use of a vehicle while conducting City business. In order to drive, individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely and must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid, Class C, California driver’s license.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: All sections require incumbents to work a flexible schedule, depending on program needs, including working evenings and weekends and shifting assignments as program needs change.
Incumbents in this classification kneel or bend to clean such surfaces as floors, decks, picnic areas, and restroom facilities; lift and carry equipment, supplies and furniture, such as tables, cases of paper goods, and bags of fertilizer, trash, or chemicals, weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted; use cleaning solutions; climb ladders to change light bulbs and to clean ceilings and light fixtures, as well as to access supplies on upper shelves; use hand tools such as a hammer, screwdriver, pliers, paint brush, mop, rake, shovel and broom while performing maintenance tasks; read and interpret diagrams and written instructions to set up for classes, programs and special events; and are occasionally exposed to paint fumes and paint clean-up materials when performing touch-up painting tasks.
Incumbents assigned to Recreation Centers lift and move tables weighing up to 60 pounds, unassisted; repeatedly bend and lift chairs, including lifting them overhead to stack them onto chair racks or dollies; and lift and move coffee pots weighing from 20 to 50 pounds. Most work in this section is performed indoors in an air-conditioned or heated facility. Incumbents use sight and hearing to set up and test audio-visual equipment for proper functioning; use cleaning solutions to clean centers; operate a variety of equipment, such as wet and dry vacuums, rug shampoo machine, and gas lawn mowers, requiring pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds; and roll out portable audio visual equipment weighing up to 40 pounds, maneuvering it through doorways and over thresholds.
For positions assigned to Aquatic Facilities, incumbents walk over wet and/or slippery ground at pools; work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including hot and cold temperatures and rainy weather; work around hazardous chemicals, such as muriatic acid, and other pool-related chemicals; distinguish colors while conducting water chemical tests; operate hand crank to install and remove pool covers with assistance; push pool cover reels weighing up to 60 pounds out of the way unassisted; lift life rescue equipment, pool furniture, guard chairs, deck vacuum, and mowing equipment weighing up to 50 pounds; and load and unload pool chemicals and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
