We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet’s wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America’s bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. NRDC is seeking a Hydrogen Advocate to work with the Industry, Innovation and Hydrogen team (part of NRDC’s Climate and Clean Energy Program) in our Washington DC (preferred) or New York office.

Position Summary

NRDC is seeking a Hydrogen Advocate to join NRDC’s Industry, Hydrogen, and Innovation team in the Washington, DC (preferred) or New York office to lead parts of NRDC’s hydrogen advocacy at the federal and state level to ensure that proliferating hydrogen activity is aligned with the goals of achieving an affordable transition to a net-zero GHG economy by 2050 and protecting the health of communities. The position will also focus on demand creation for green hydrogen in hard-to-electrify applications, including steelmaking and marine shipping. NRDC believes that, with rigorous safeguards and when deployed in the hardest-to-electrify applications, green hydrogen can play a key role in supporting climate goals. The new hire is expected to actively participate in a range of federal hydrogen efforts, including legislative and administrative efforts, and bring to bear NRDC’s experience with coalition building, policy design, and multi-stakeholder advocacy.

Responsibilities

  • Lead parts of NRDC’s federal hydrogen advocacy to ensure climate-aligned hydrogen deployment by pressing for safeguards to minimize harmful deployment and erecting effective opposition to problematic policies.
  • Design, and advocate for, targeted market formation policies to spur the deployment of green hydrogen in hard-to-electrify applications.
  • Help build internal expertise related to deploying green hydrogen in service of decarbonizing heavy industrial applications and fuels for off-road transportation. We are looking to build expertise with the techo-economics and policy design.
  • Represent NRDC through active participation in and leadership of coalitions, providing collaboration and guidance to maximize effectiveness and grow support for safeguards and needed policies.
  • Regularly work with diverse stakeholders, including environmental organizations, labor groups, environmental justice groups, industry groups, and others.
  • Liaise, as needed, with funders in support of the hydrogen team’s development goals.
  • Develop written materials (e.g., blogs, action plans, white papers) to educate policymakers and other stakeholders on the policies and practices needed to ensure climate-aligned green hydrogen deployment.
  • Engage with media, as needed, in support of the hydrogen team’s communications goals.

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years working experience in policy advocacy, policy design or a related technical field
  • Experience with a technical subject matter and understanding of the dynamics of economy-wide deep decarbonization are required
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, understand and translate complex scientific, legal and policy matters for advocacy purposes
  • Demonstrated ability to build and work within coalitions that reach beyond the traditional environmental community
  • Strong strategic skills relevant to policy, advocacy, and project development
  • Experience managing complex projects involving many moving parts and teams
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and manage consultants, fellows and/or interns on discrete projects
  • Persuasive verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong inter-personal, relationship-building and networking skills
  • Substantial experience with public speaking and oral advocacy with decisionmakers

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary is $113,000 to $121,000 Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.

Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You will be associated with one of our offices, but until circumstances allow us to re-open, we will continue to support NRDCers with remote working arrangements.
