Zoo Grounds Worker – Seasonal ((Spring/Summer)

Hourly Pay Range: $9.75 – 18.05

Job Summary: To assist in the general upkeep of operations of the Zoological Gardens and perform assigned duties to ensure a pleasurable and safe experience for all Zoo visitors.

Job Responsibilities

  • Park Cleanup – Remove waste and recyclables; clean and pick up litter; leaf blowing and pick up leaves; remove snow and treat ice; pick up and deliver animal food, tables, chairs or other items.
  • Landscaping – Operate riding mowers, push mowers, weed whackers, tillers, aerators, and pruners. Remove invasive plants, weed and water plants. Top dress, seed and perform other landscape functions.
  • Operation of Vehicles – Able to operate electric/gas driven carts and light duty trucks. Driving off Zoo grounds to pick up trees, bushes, and other items needed for the zoo. Driving duties could include the plowing of snow.
  • Repair and Operate – Routine maintenance of buildings, fencing, pavement, and various equipment. Paint buildings and fences. Operate equipment such as pressure washers, fork lifts and skid loaders.
  • May lead less experienced Zoo Workers in day to day tasks of Grounds work.
  • Miscellaneous – Provide information and directions to Zoo Visitors. Lend assistance to Zoo Visitors and other staff.
  • Ability to safely and properly operate: full size pickup trucks (plowing and hauling), light trailers, utility vehicles, golf carts, pressure washers, forklifts, skid loaders, and vac-all equipment.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and various weather conditions.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; and ability to push and pull up to 75 lbs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education, License/Certification and Experience

  • Eligible applicants must be at least 16 years of age upon application
  • Basic knowledge of all related computer and software applications, such as word processing and spreadsheets (Microsoft Word and Excel) required
  • Valid Driver’s License preferred
  • Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred
  • Forklift certification, experience or training preferred
  • Skid steer certification, experience or training preferred
