Building Sciences Specialist

Location: Columbus, OH

We are currently seeking a Building Sciences Specialist to join our team in the Columbus, OH area. As a leading environmental consulting firm, we specialize in various aspects of environmental fieldwork, including asbestos, lead, mold, radon, indoor air quality (IAQ), and industrial hygiene. You will work under the guidance of professional-level technical personnel, reporting to a Building Sciences Manager, Senior Manager, or Principal.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Train and guide field personnel in the project scope of work completion.
  • Perform asbestos-related tasks such as inspection, bulk sample collection, abatement oversight, air monitoring, and air clearance sampling.
  • Conduct lead-based paint-related activities, including inspections/risk assessments and sampling, abatement oversight, dust wipe/air clearance sampling, and report writing.
  • Manage IAQ and mold-related work, from initial inspections and investigations to environmental sampling, remediation oversight, and pre/post-remediation air clearance sampling.
  • Conduct industrial hygiene investigations and monitoring events, including sample calibration, setup of air monitoring equipment, and documenting employee work practices and procedures.
  • Manage project budgeting, estimating/management, scheduling, field activities, data interpretation, client interaction, and preparing reports and invoicing.
  • Identify potential sources of contamination on job sites.
  • Communicate scope of work changes to the Project Manager and client and execute change orders when necessary.
  • Perform regulatory and technical research to support projects.
  • Evaluate, select, schedule, and manage subcontractors.
  • Maintain continuous communication with clients throughout projects.
  • Prepare Health and Safety Plans (HASPs) or Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), review and enforce plans, and ensure site safety for all personnel.
  • Document all field activities thoroughly.
  • Create job descriptions for completed projects and update the resume accordingly.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of building construction and materials.
  • Awareness of environmental hazards and safety measures.
  • Ability to calibrate and use various types of field equipment.
  • Proficiency in mathematical calculations.
  • Quick learner with the ability to absorb job-related information through verbal instruction, training, reading, researching, and on-the-job observation.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing multiple projects effectively.

Job Specifications:

  • Education: A.S. or B.S. in geology, engineering, chemistry, environmental science, or a related field OR GED with construction or labor experience.
  • Recommended Experience: 3+ years of experience in Building Sciences-related consulting.
  • Certifications: Asbestos Building Inspector, Lead Inspector/Risk Assessor, Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, & Restoration Certification (IICRC) Mold Remediation or Water Restoration Certifications, or Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) 40 hours Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) are advantageous.
  • Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Additional requirements: Physically capable of safely operating vehicles, possess a valid driver’s license, maintain an acceptable driving record, and pass a medical clearance from a baseline physical.

Job Context:

  • 40% office-based (controlled environment), 60% client/site travel with potential environmental hazards.

This position may require travel to various client locations, typically involving day trips within the state or neighboring states, occasionally resulting in longer workdays, extended stays, or air travel.
