Scotiabank is currently seeking a Director, Global Operations to join our growing team! The Director, as the technology owner, will be responsible for the strategic direction, leadership and oversight of the Global Operations Technology team with a focus on modernization across the portfolio. They will build and manage foundational components for operations using modern technology that leverage current processes and increase velocity while reducing cost/effort. The Director’s role includes developing and implementing the appropriate Operations technology strategy, which mitigates operational risk and delivers value, in collaboration with Global Wholesale Operations stakeholders and regional Technology teams. This individual will ensure business strategies, plans and initiatives are supported in compliance with governing internal standards, policies and procedures as well as regulations in Canada (IIROC, OSC), the U.S. (SEC, FRB NY, NY DFS) and abroad (UK FCA, Singapore MAS etc.)

The Director will manage all technology aspects of Global Capital Markets within the Operations portfolio. The Director will actively pursue increasing business value through the delivery of cost-effective vendor-hosted and internal solutions and the effective and efficient operations of their respective areas, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational risk, regulatory compliance risk, and conduct risk. This includes but is not limited to responsibilities under the Operational Risk Management Framework, Business Outsourcing Framework and Guidelines for Business Conduct. It also includes supporting and responding to internal/external Audit, Third- Party Risk, Privacy Office and Regulatory reviews and findings.

The Director has opportunity to:

  • Be nimble in delivering to business and regulatory deadlines
  • Manage multiple small and large projects concurrently with IT spend between $2MM and $30MM

Is this role right for you? You will be responsible for:

  • Leads and drives a customer focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
  • Ensures round the clock production support for multiple applications, managed globally and must ensure high availability, integrity and reliability of programs and processes developed where the consequence of error could expose the Bank to a significant loss or undue risk.
  • Apply modern technology to new and legacy operational requirements
  • Communicates vision/values/business strategy and manages succession and development planning for the team.
  • Aggregating capacity and demand of the work portfolio
  • Ensures the timely development and implementation of multiple applications and IT solutions – involving multiple systems, multiple dependencies and multiple stakeholders/business partners – where solutions cross business lines and customer segments, globally
  • Plans and directs application/technology projects and ongoing support, and leads their teams of Project Managers, Developers and Business Analysts.
  • Effective communication skills to executive leadership, business leaders and staff
  • Interprets and implements a continuous improvement process and mindset for production issues to ensure the effective and timely resolution of problems and knowledge transfer.
  • Builds and maintains a strong working relationship with peers and management within the business lines.
  • Partners with stakeholders to translate business requirements into actionable strategies and then identifies
  • appropriate solutions to deliver on objectives. Ensures that all work adheres to GBME’s strategic architecturaldirection and Bank Standards.
  • Acts as a primary interface and conduit between the operational owners and other technology groups, including Third Party vendors to lead the facilitation and execution of operations technology management activities.
  • Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
  • Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.

Do you have the skills you need to succeed? We’d love to work with you, if you have:

  • Engineering/Development or strong technical background is required
  • Experience implementing medium and large solutions
  • Experienced with vendor communication and management
  • 10+ years of IT and business/industry work experience.
  • Relevant capital markets knowledge and experience (existing systems and new technologies).
  • Excellent business and technical knowledge and experience (understanding of vision, financial objectives/how business functions and core processes interact/the strategic importance of projects, how they relate to Scotiabank’s goals, how projects interact/impact of change and/or delays in projects).
  • Process knowledge and experience in scheduling, resource allocation, risk management and systems design.
  • Critical thinking, continuous improvement and transformation in leading the group delivering high performance while aligning to group and Bank’s strategic direction.
