Department Information
Indiana University Public Safety pursues IU’s commitment to providing the greatest degree of safety for all members of the IU community, consistent with the university’s mission and environment, applicable legal and professional standards, and available resources. IU Public Safety directly oversees the IU Police Department , University Environmental Health and Safety , and Emergency Management and Continuity with a team of approximately 300 dedicated staff on a 24/7/365 operational basis across all campuses.
Job Summary
- Protects citizens’ rights, property and persons; identifies and prevents criminal and delinquent behavior; maintains order and facilitates the safe, expeditious movement of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
- Assists citizens, resolves conflict, maintains order, and deters crime; provides information to students, faculty, and staff regarding state, local, and federal law, as well as university policy and procedures.
- Investigates complaints and accidents, documents information, maintains records, collects evidence, questions individuals, drafts and enters reports in the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management System (RMS); enters information/reports/accidents/citations into all software systems and databases as required.
Issues citations and/or arrests law violators; prepares and serves civil processes; responds quickly to medical assistance calls, accidents, fires, disturbances, and breaches of law; administers aid as a first responder. - Provides security for buildings and university property; provides security and law enforcement presence for special events (commencement, athletic events, visiting dignitaries, cultural events, etc.).
- Performs additional public safety/service duties as needed.
Qualifications
This position is posted at a Foundational Career Level but may be filled at another level depending on the candidate’s qualifications. Although they will be similar, the duties and responsibilities may differ if filled at another rank. Please see the qualifications listed below for each level.
Patrol Officer (Foundational)
EDUCATION
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) certification eligible.
- Attain firearms qualification within 1 year from date of hire.
Patrol Officer (Intermediate)
EDUCATION
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- 1 year of law enforcement experience.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) certified.
- Current firearms qualification upon date of hire.
Senior Patrol Officer (Intermediate)
EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of law enforcement experience; OR
- Associate degree and 5 years of law enforcement experience; OR
- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) and 7 years of law enforcement experience.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- 1 specialty (FTO, Instructor, Leadership Academy, Detective).
- No performance issues.
- Current firearms qualification upon date of hire.
Master Patrol Officer (Mastery)
EDUCATION / WORK EXPERIENCE
Required
- Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of law enforcement experience; OR
- Associate degree and 13 years of law enforcement experience; OR
- High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED) and 15 years of law enforcement experience.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- 1 specialty (FTO, Instructor, Leadership Academy, Detective).
- No performance issues.
- Current firearms qualification upon date of hire.
Additional Qualifications for All Levels
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES
Required
- Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire.
- ILEA (Indiana Law Enforcement Academy) eligible upon date of hire.
- Complete all required annual law enforcement training and attain required certifications as prescribed by Indiana state law and the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board (ILETB) within 1 year from date of hire.
- Attain university required certifications in CPR, AED, Blood Borne Pathogens, IDACS, etc. within 1 year from date of hire.

Working Conditions / Demands
The role frequently requires the ability to remain in a stationary position and communicate effectively. The role frequently requires the ability to move about the working environment; handle or operate objects, controls, or tools listed above; ascend/descend ladders or stairs; position self to move at lower levels; and discern scents. The role requires the ability to lift and/or move more than 165 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and detect how far away an object is. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
Additional Information
This position is also open to those candidates that are currently police officers certified by the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board.

Advertised Salary
Patrol Officer (Foundational) will have an annualized salary of $53,622
Patrol Officer (Intermediate) will have an annualized salary of $58,364
Patrol Officer Senior (Intermediate) will have an annualized salary of $66,435
Patrol Officer Master (Mastery) will have an annualized salary of $72,987
