JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title: Assistant Director of Special Education – 12 Months
Location: Unit Office
Department: School Administration
Reports to: Director of Special Education
FLSA Class: Exempt
FTE: 1.0
SUMMARY
The Assistant Director of Special Education will assist the District in ensuring students with disabilities are provided with appropriate instruction and support in order to promote their educational well-being in compliance with Federal and State regulations.
The Assistant Director of Special Education will be held accountable for the following responsibilities:
- Promote the use of research-based interventions, strategies, and instruction and help lead the District MTSS process including annual training to staff
- Assist in designing professional development for District Paraprofessional Staff
- Coordinate oversight, support, and professional development for all self contained programs to ensure best practices are utilized district wide
- Provide administrative support and technical assistance to assigned schools for administrators, learning behavior specialists, general educators, and school teams in the areas of curriculum development, instructional techniques, behavior management, and effective educational practices in order to adhere to IDEA regulations
- Understands and support teachers on effective instructional strategies for students with disabilities including supporting Tier 1 instruction for students in general education classroom environments
- Coordinate annual professional development for newly hired special education staff
- Coach special education teachers on effective, researched based instruction, data collection, and IEP writing through professional development opportunities, task forces, and SIP days
- Assist in monitoring special education programs and related services to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and local district policies and procedures
- Assist the Director of Special Education to monitor, evaluate, and ensure the implementation of Individual Education Programs via monthly caseload data updates, to ensure a successful continuum of services exists
- Assist in the coordination and preparation of due process, mediation, and state complaint related issues in collaboration with the Director of Special Education
- Collaborate with Principals, Assistant Principals (and other stakeholders) and District Representatives to assess and analyze the needs of individual students
- Stay informed of all legal requirements governing special education
- Supervise, evaluate, recruit, and interview for employment of special education teachers and related service staff as applicable
- Encourage and initiate collaboration with various school and community agencies to help meet the needs of students with special needs
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum of Five (5) years of special education experience
- Master’s degree with coursework in Director of Special Education Program (preferred) or Educational Administration
- Such alternatives within the guidelines of the Illinois State Board of Education and acceptable to the Board of Education of McLean County Unit District No. 5
- Professional image, actions, communications, and working relationships are required at all times
- Maintains excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, articulation, concentration, confidentiality, and maintains a positive attitude
- Maintains excellent consultation and collaboration skills as well as organizational and time management skills
- Able to perform job duties at assigned work location on a regular and consistent basis
Compensation
Salary range is $86,000 – $116,000 annually. Fully Board Paid Medical, Dental, and Vision are available.
