Job purpose
The Facility Engineer/Painter provides a variety of skilled work in maintenance, alteration, and repairs of District facilities and equipment. Self-motivation with an ability to work both independently and cooperatively as a team member is critical. This position requires proficient skills in maintenance trades.
Duties and responsibilities
- Performs routine and moderately complex maintenance and repairs on interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, furniture, and various equipment and facilities.
- Plans and prepares all facets of painting projects, e.g., measuring, cleaning, caulking, masking, assembly of scaffolding, spackling floating mud, mixes, and prepares paints and finishes.
- Removes old paint and finishes from surfaces; prepares surfaces using sandblaster, sandpaper, wire brushes, steel wool, and/or scraper and stripping compounds; fill nail holes, cracks, and joints with putty, plaster, or other filler.
- Performs interior and exterior painting in the preparation and finishing of various surfaces, including pressure washing, chemical paint removal, sandblasting, sanding, brush painting, roller painting, and power spray painting.
- Applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and/or protect interior or exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings and other surfaces.
- Performs painting maintenance and repair work to woodwork, shelving, furniture, and cabinetry; applies specialized wall and ceiling covering; may make limited repairs to drywall and ceilings.
- Paints surfaces using different techniques and tools, e.g., feather, brush, roller, cloth, airless spray equipment, and/or conventional spray equipment.
- Disposes of waste and hazardous materials in accordance with prescribed safety policies and environmental procedures; maintains cleanliness of painting facilities and equipment; maintains an inventory of materials.
- Performs all work in compliance with all applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Purchases materials.
- Moves or assists in the removal of furniture and other heavy equipment to facilitate painting; assists other trades workers with special projects involving painting and various maintenance work.
- Operates various automobiles and transport vehicles, e.g., car, utility truck, and utility van.
- Completes necessary paperwork and reports as it relates to work projects.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools
- Other duties may be assigned as needed.
Qualifications
Required
- HS diploma or GED certificate.
- Ability to perform tasks without constant supervision.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Ability to lift and carry 50lbs with or without accommodation.
- Previous Experience
Preferred
- Experience working in a school environment
Skills and Knowledge
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing with a variety of individuals.
- Ability to multitask and adjust to frequent interruptions and shifting deadlines. Possess excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Operate a forklift, boom, scissor lifts. Work safely in operating equipment and/or performing duties to prevent injury to self and others.
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide into all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions and percentages.
- Computer Skills: Ability to proficiently use email, Google, and the work order system.
Working conditions
Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, walking, or standing for prolonged periods of time; near visual acuity to review written documentation; ability to hear and understand speech at normal room levels and on the telephone; manual dexterity and hand/eye coordination to operate vehicles, equipment, computers and communication devices; normal office and shop environment; exposure to changing temperatures and weather conditions, frequent lifting and moving items of varying weight and size.Occasionally perform work beyond a standard 40-hour workweek when work-load requires.
Physical requirements
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; significant climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires 10% sitting, 60% walking, and 30% standing.
