PhD Intern, AI Software Engineer

Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.

General Description:

Design and supervise the development and deployment of AI Engineering software and services applicable to the full AI Engineering lifecycle. Build Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) environments, supervise synthetic and real-world data collection/curation, and interface with other software engineers, scientists, and PI/PMs performing AI research and algorithm development.

Essential Duties:

Design and development of AI / Machine Learning software, tools, and services.

Required Skills:

Python, C++, PyTorch, Tensorflow, JAX, and agile software development tools and techniques, self-hosted (on-premises) AI software services and supporting tools, e.g. Weights and Balances (wandb), Neptune, Optuna, MLFlow, GitLab CI/CD, GitLab runners, Docker/containerization, etc.

Familiarity with existing AI Software Engineering techniques, tools, and services. Experience with ML hyperparameter optimization, ML model repositories, data/object storage (e.g. S3 based data lakes, data warehouses, and lakehouses), and data versioning. Experience in developing reproducible ML pipelines is also desirable, i.e. automated ML workflows for data transformation (ETL/ELT), correlation, testing, evaluation, training, and deployment stages. Ability to develop and deploy services and applications in a hybrid Kubernetes cloud environment is beneficial.

Required Education:

Existing student pursuing a PhD degree in Artificial Intelligence related field, e.g. Computer Science, Machine Learning, Software Engineering, Cognitive Science, Data Science, Statistics, etc.

Special Requirements:

Active security clearance or ability to obtain one is desirable.

Compensation:

The pay range for this position is $50 – $55 per hour.
