Reporting to the Vice President for Precision Oncology and the Director of the Project Management Office in Research Administration, the Precision Oncology Scientific Program Manager (PM) will work with the vice president of Precision Oncology and director of the Stuart and Molly Sloan Precision Oncology Institute to develop and implement a world-class Precision Oncology program at Fred Hutch. The PM is responsible for the planning and design, development, and execution of key projects for Precision Oncology and specifically focus on research projects that test strategies for exploiting individualized features of patients and environments to optimize treatment outcomes. The PM will: (i) design clinical studies involving approaches to prevent and treat a variety of cancers; (ii) analyze clinical outcomes in the context of novel predictive and prognostic biomarkers; (iii) design and prepare research grant proposals; and (iv) report research finding through publications and presentations. The PM will also develop and manage internal and external collaborations across departments and workgroups to ensure project milestones and deliverables are met in an efficient manner.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and conducting clinical and laboratory studies to develop optimized/precision approaches for preventing and treating human cancers. The position will support initiatives developed through the Vice President of Precision Oncology (VP PO) and will focus on implementation and assessments of outcomes. The PM, with assistance from the VP PO, will design and implement a strategic plan, including defining, tracking, and reporting milestones & deliverables. The PM will provide scientific support to the PO program including the design and evaluation of new research projects, evaluating design and implementation of key scientific resources, and reporting research results to the Precision Oncology Scientific Advisory Board. In addition to the design and conduct of clinical trials, the PM will analyze data from biospecimens/medical samples to discover the cause(s) and develop new treatments for cancer and related diseases. A component of the work will involve creating and evaluating new medical devices and assays. The PM will oversee all aspects of PO projects including setting scientific goals and milestones, assigning responsibilities, monitoring status, evaluating research results, as well as preparing materials and reports for publications and data dissemination. This position requires a strong knowledge of scientific methods including hypothesis generation and the design of achieveable specific aims, understanding of clinical trial design and implementation, understanding of molecular biology and genetics, flexibility in a rapidly changing environment, attention to detail and strong communication skills.

  1. Design and implement research studies that focus on clinical testing of new treatments and biomarkers designed to exploit molecularly-guided therapy and cancer prevention strategies (30%)
  2. Develop new hypotheses and approaches for cancer prevention and treatment that employ a biomarker design strategy and that address and exploit molecular, ancestry, and environmental variation (20%).
  3. Oversee the intake and implementation of complex projects at the interface of basic research and clinical implementation. Identify critical path activities and coordinate with responsible parties to ensure deliverables are achieved. (10%)
  4. Write research grant proposals and articles for publication that disseminate the ideas and results of the precision oncology studies(10%)
  5. Lead approaches to provide public/patient education relating to precision oncology (10%).
  6. Select the appropriate management tools to achieve strategic goals, hold team members accountable to commitments, and lead project teams in evaluation of progress and accomplishments. Performs project after action review to determine areas for process improvement. 10%
  7. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to determine prioritization of competing activities and build and maintain strong working relationships with investigators, project sponsors, leadership, research administration, administrative departments and peers. 10%
  8. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Relevant Skills and Abilities

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral Degree; work experience can be substituted for education
  • 3 years of experience designing, conducting and reporting basic and translational scientific projects/investigation.
  • Experience in managing/conducting a multiple project portfolio
  • Highly effective team player and excellent communicator with an ability to interact with and influence internal and external stakeholders and work with scientists, patients, and executives with diverse information needs and communications preferences
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced meeting organization and facilitation skills
  • Knowledge of project management methodologies and tools

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience
  • Prior experience with designing, and/or implementing clinical trials
  • Thorough working knowledge of strategic planning processes and best practices
  • Ability to identify and take advantage of new opportunities, best practices and potential partnerships, taking into consideration scientific, academic, clinical, and industry-oriented objectives and key stakeholders’ expectations
  • Project management certification

This position is patient facing and/or requires access to Fred Hutch clinical facilities. As such, full COVID-19 vaccination is required as a condition of employment, without exception. Booster doses are strongly recommended but not required. The annual base salary range for this position is from $111,748 to $176,634 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
