Arup’s Western Region (Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, and Seattle) is seeking a Senior Energy Engineer to join our Energy and Sustainability team to support a wide range of innovative urban energy infrastructure projects. We seek creative self-initiating problem-solvers, able to work as part of a team and independently, applying a wide range of communication and analytical skills to design and consulting. We are also looking for someone with a passion for low carbon design and proven track record of delivering projects.
You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary integrated team to help lead, manage and deliver work focusing on our growing body of work in energy infrastructure planning for new and existing developments with a focus on thermal energy. You will also contribute to energy analysis of large portfolios of buildings, high performance buildings, masterplans and related energy projects. Your role will include energy simulation, infrastructure sizing, business case development, energy benchmarking, identification of energy savings, compliance with codes and standards, and innovative ways of working. On a daily basis you might lead and review the simulation efforts of a team of consultants, lead analyses by junior staff, develop new processes, oversee written and graphical summaries of work for clients, attend client meetings and assist with or lead proposals.
As a Senior District Energy Engineer, you will be responsible for:
- Advising clients on energy infrastructure and energy generation opportunities for new and existing developments
- Analysis of land use programs to determine the best energy technologies and infrastructure using energy modelling software
- Developing the technical and economic business cases for energy infrastructure options
- Leading feasibility studies and designs of urban energy infrastructure systems
- Facilitate meetings and workshops with clients to establish their needs and discuss design issues
- Drafting reports and deliverables including sketches, technical reports and presentations
- Developing tools and processes to improve energy analysis
- Coordinating with internal teams on multi-discipline projects to deliver integrated solutions
- Managing and delivering projects and budgets
- Managing client relationships
- Training, mentoring and directing junior staff
- Leading proposal development
- Identification of business development opportunities
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, electrical or industrial engineering
- 5+ years’ experience professional experience as an engineer, or consultant in the built environment
- Hold a PE, CEM, or equivalent
- Proficient in District Energy and microgrid analysis, including the use of specialized energy simulation software (EnergyPro, Homer, Xendee, Calliope, EnergyPlus, etc) to determine feasibility and develop designs
- Excellent knowledge of renewable energy technologies
- Knowledge of building energy systems
- Proficient user of Excel
- Ability to perform cost & benefit financial analysis over a project life cycle
- Knowledge of energy and carbon regulations and codes
- Ability to work independently and seek out guidance and feedback at regular intervals.
- Familiarity with rating systems including Envision, Living Community Challenge, and LEED
- Active member of local industry related groups e.g. ASHRAE, IEEE
Preferred:
- Master’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering or industrial engineering
- LEED accredited
- Proficiency in AutoCad or GIS
- Understanding of energy infrastructure finance and business models
- Experience with existing buildings
- Building design experience
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign), GIS and Rhino
- Perform climate risk resilience assessments
- Use of design software, such as Rhino, Grasshopper, Ladybug, Honeybee, DIVA, SketchUp, etc.
- Coding skills in software such as: Python, Perl, R, or Julia
- Prior project work with statistics, data analytics, advanced algorithms, or machine

Hiring Range: The good faith base salary hiring range for this job performed in California is $96,500 and $130,000. Benefits are not included in the base salary range. Summary of benefits are included in this posting with details provided to applicants at the time of interview. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of California will differ.
