This salary is within the LS (Legal Service) salary schedule at a Grade 14 step 1. The salary will be based on a multitude of factors including applicable rules, regulations, and guidelines.

JOB SUMMARY
DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES: The Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia seeks a trial attorney for Section II of the Civil Litigation Division (CLD). CLD defends the District of Columbia, including District agencies, officers, and employees, in civil lawsuits filed in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking monetary damages, equitable remedies, and other relief. Attorneys within CLD Section II handle a variety of matters, including employment discrimination claims, personal injury and other common law tort cases, and federal constitutional civil rights litigation, among others.
The successful candidate will have an individual caseload of at least 25 active civil cases and will be expected to serve as first chair on various litigation and trial teams. The incumbent will prepare and file pleadings, serve and respond to written discovery, take and defend depositions, file and respond to procedural and dispositive motions, negotiate settlements, conduct trials and contested hearings, and litigate disputes regarding attorney’s fees. There is substantial contact with client agencies and individual clients. The position requires extensive knowledge of civil trial and pretrial processes and relevant civil litigation experience.
QUALIFICATIONS: A minimum of five years of civil litigation experience is required. Prior civil litigation experience may include trials or evidentiary hearings, motions and discovery practice, taking and defending depositions, and a thorough knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and Evidence. Experience in one or more substantive areas where the Division practices is highly desirable. The successful candidate should be a self-starter, have excellent research and writing skills, and be able to handle multiple competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
ELIGIBILITY: The successful candidate must have a law degree and be an active member in good standing of the bar of any jurisdiction. If not a member of the District of Columbia Bar, the candidate must be sworn into the District of Columbia Bar within 360 days of his/her initial appointment with the Office of the Attorney General for the District of Columbia.

PRIORITY CONSIDERATION: Displaced Employee Priority Placement: Candidates who are eligible for the District of Columbia’s Displaced Employee Program (DEP) and Agency Reemployment Priority Placement Program (ARPP) will be given priority consideration for this position if found qualified.
EMPLOYMENT BENEFITS: Selectee will be eligible for health and life insurance, annual (vacation), and sick leave and will be covered under the District of Columbia government’s retirement plan. However, if the selectee was previously employed in the District of Columbia’s government under an appointment for which he/she was eligible for Civil Service Retirement (CSR), contributions to CSR will resume upon re-employment.
RESIDENCY PREFERENCE: A person applying for a position in the Career Service, Education Service, Management Supervisory Service, an attorney position in the Legal Service (series 905) other than in the Senior Executive Attorney Service (SEAS), or an attorney in the Excepted Service (series 905) who is a bona fide District resident AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District residents’ applications, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present proofs of bona fide District residency and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment. If the position you accept is in the Career, Management Supervisory, or Educational Service at an annual salary of one hundred fifty thousand dollars ($150,000) or more, you must establish residency in the District of Columbia within one hundred eighty (180) days of the effective date of employment and continue to maintain residency within the District of Columbia throughout the duration of employment.
