Library Assistant II – Children – Youth – Main Branch

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, to perform and supervise a variety of responsible paraprofessional library tasks in departmental areas; to plan and execute programs for children and young adults; and to assist patrons with reference questions.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Exercises technical and functional supervision over lower level staff.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Children’s Librarian, develop and conduct informative and entertaining programs for children and young adults.

Review books and materials for possible acquisition by the library.

Maintain departmental files.

Work with audiovisual materials in conjunction with programs.

Assist patrons in areas such as explaining policies and procedures, locating and utilizing requested materials, assisting in programs using premise facilities, assisting in research in a variety of areas, and the use of library instruments.

Assist as needed in all circulation functions including registering patrons, checking out material, discharging material, and taking in fine payments.

Provide readers’ advisory assistance to children, young adults, and adults.

Operate a City or personal vehicle weekly to travel to various sites for programming purposes.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

For positions with more than one level, all listed requirements at the lower

levels are required at the higher levels. Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. Knowledge, skills, and abilities may be obtained through:

Experience:

One (1) to two (2) years of experience in a public library is preferred.

Education/Training:

Must have a high school diploma or GED.

College level course work in early childhood development and/or education is preferred.

License or Certificate:

A valid Texas driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.

Special Requirements:

Travel to other branches and to outside locations for programs.

Work evenings and weekends when schedule requires.
