Department Description The Department of Public Affairs and Marketing plans, manages and implements Strategic communications (such as news services, public relations, marketing, internal and external communications) for UC Davis Health. Communications are aimed at a wide range of key constituencies such as: the news media, UC administration, UC Davis faculty, staff and students, government and regulatory leaders, external physicians, business leaders, patients and health care consumers, and the general public.
The Department of Public Health Sciences (PHS) is a large complex research, teaching, and service department that is part of the UC Davis School of Medicine and UC Davis Health. The mission of the Department is to improve the health of the population using approaches based in epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, and behavioral science through research, educational programs, clinical programs, public service, and policy development. We are a highly collaborative, diverse group of over 200 faculty, researchers, and administrative staff, with over $40 million in active research grants.

Responsibilities
The Senior Communications and Marketing Specialist is responsible for all communications and marketing efforts and develops relevant policies and procedures for a high-profile and multidisciplinary department. Reporting to the News and Media Relations Director for UC Davis Health and the department CAO and Chair of Public Health Sciences, the Specialist is responsible for the development and execution of long- and short-term strategic communications plans, with projects focused on public and population health, and the development of an overall strategy for department communications. Responsible for identifying departmental communications needs, and developing and publishing the content needed for department research units, affiliated centers and the educational division. All these activities are coordinated with the related communications and marketing programs underway for the UC Davis School of Medicine, UC Davis Health, and UC Davis overall. Duties include growing the Department’s visibility, and later building a team to support the Department’s future communications needs.
Required Qualifications
- Extensive experience using communication skills, both written and oral, to include preparation of written products for senior leaders use and the ability to communicate at all levels
- Extensive experience creating clear, effective strategic communication plans, organizing projects and executing plans with key performance indicators
- Substantial experience successfully producing effective materials and social media content.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, or equivalent education and work experience
- Demonstrated skill in strategic message development, audience identification and issue- management in alignment with an organization’s institutional goals
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning for various media venues, technical aspects and requirements of various venues, and most appropriate and effective applications
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media and applications
- Advanced skills to create, develop, and implement long and short-term strategic communication plans. Advanced skills to advise and consult on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of technical applications to direct staff, or personally perform technical work, including design concepts, various media, and applications. Navigating content management applications and online communications platforms
- Strong political acumen and extraordinary sensitivity to the perceptions and concerns of others, with the ability to craft communications that respond to political realities and stakeholder needs
- Working knowledge of AP style, with willingness to learn and integrate custom UC Davis Health style variations
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with public health
- Ten or more years of relevant experience
- Website SEO (search engine optimization) best practices knowledge and related experience
Special Requirements
Valid California Driver’s License and ability to drive and access a car. Must participate in the DMV Pull Notice Program.
Occasional travel may be required, which may include driving and overnight stays.
