Payroll Accountant

What You Will Do

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Accountant 1 to support the Controller Division. In this role, you will have the ability to provide support and become a member of the Controller Payroll & Benefits (CNTL-PRBEN) Group.

The selected candidate will report to the Oracle payroll functional team. This position reports directly to the Oracle Payroll Team Leader, receiving functional and operational direction from the designated supervisor/manager or his/her designee(s). The work includes a wide variety of payroll processing activities, including time entry tracking, entry or validation of payroll related forms, wage orders, manual earnings and deductions, and review of biweekly payroll results and control reports prior to disbursement of funds. Responsibilities also include termination processing, customer service coverage via email or the payroll call center for both payroll and time and labor module inquires. Other duties may include maintaining related records, filing, preparing accounting transactions and documents, documenting, and updating procedures, and special projects. The ability to understand, apply and explain HR and CFO Laboratory policies is a key skill for this position. This position requires a proven record of excellent attendance and availability to periodically work outside of the normal work week.
What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
Payroll Experience

Demonstrated experience as part of a payroll team within a medium to large, complex organization that includes a proven ability prioritizing and effectively handling multiple responsibilities within strict deadlines. Demonstrated broad ability to interpret policy and support compliance via payroll/time collection systems, processes, and controls. Experience with accounting, benefits accounting, and tax accounting and working experience with pay components such as explaining Gross to Net calculation to an employee.

Payroll/Regulations

Demonstrated knowledge of accounting/financial concepts and principles that include Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Cost Accounting Standards (CAS) and proper application of internal controls for a payroll operation and broad understanding of accounting and finance functions. Demonstrated knowledge of IRS regulations and year-end payroll reporting requirements; local, state, federal and DOL regulations and reporting requirements. Proven ability in the following: applying and upholding policies as they apply to payroll and time charging practices; strong problem solving and analytical skills; research payroll and business issues; awareness of importance of confidentiality and requirements surrounding personally identifiable information (PII).

Problem Solving

Experience and proven ability in researching, troubleshooting, and resolving payroll issues.

Communication/Teamwork/Organization

Demonstrated experience in the following: effectively interacting with customers, peers, and management; excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills; demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team with stringent deadlines, interruptions and changing priorities with a high degree of accuracy and accountability.

Technical Experience

General understanding of payroll time and labor system data integration in an ERP to facilitate troubleshooting. Experience with Microsoft Office tool, especially Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Education/Experience

Position requires a bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field and 2 years of experience; or the equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience directly related to the occupation.

Work Location: The work location for this position is telework and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Telework is defined as working from offsite but within 2hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite may be periodically necessary. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 – Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
