The North Polk Community School District is a progressive educational community located in the Des Moines metro area just north of Ankeny serving the communities of Alleman, Elkhart, Polk City, and Sheldahl. The District proudly serves over 2000 learners from preschool through 12th grade in five buildings (West Elementary, PK-2nd; Central Elementary, PK-5th, Big Creek Elementary, 3rd-5th; Middle School, 6th-8th; and High School, 9th-12th).

North Polk High School, located in Alleman, is seeking to hire a High School Office Assistant.

Reports To: High School Principal and Assistant Principal

Hours: Mon 9:30am-4:00pm, Tues-Fri 7:30am-4:00pm

Compensation: $17.32/hr

Days: 180, student scheduled days

Basic Function: To provide administrative support to the high school office, including administrators, secretary, and others including students, parents, and staff.

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Is responsible for everything involved in the day-to-day running of the High School Office.
  2. Assists with distribution of building communication to students, staff, community, and families.
  3. Answers the telephone, takes messages and follows up with students/staff.
  4. Sorts and distributes mail and maintains postage usage.
  5. Processes building correspondence, letters, announcements, and websites.
  6. Works and communicates with all staff, students, parents, and public.
  7. Handles confidential and routine matters.
  8. Is responsible for daily attendance; telephoning parents of students not in attendance that have not called the school; keeping the Assistant Principal informed regarding attendance, tardy and truancy problems.
  9. Coordinates staff absences and substitutes via electronic system.
  10. Welcomes substitutes and routes them where they are assigned. Assists with seeing that teaching assignments are covered in case of emergency.
  11. Assumes responsibility in the absence of the school nurse and provides limited health care service to students. Administers and maintains daily records of all medications given to students as directed by doctors and or parents/guardians.
  12. Routes families to appropriate registration resources, assists in explaining fees, and updates Infinite Campus information, as applicable.
  13. Supervises the use of and operates the office equipment.
  14. Is responsible for inventory, ordering and distribution of supplies for office/building. Assists electronic ordering process for assigned staff to receive and distribute orders.
  15. In collaboration with district registrar, assists with maintaining accurate student information: addresses and contacts, physicals, waivers, etc.
  16. Maintains enrollment list of students, withdrawals, and additions.
  17. Updates and maintains electronic student records and files.
  18. Is knowledgeable in areas of the Infinite Campus programs.
  19. Assists to maintain and update the student/parent handbook.
  20. Collects money envelopes from students and staff.
  21. Assists with details of student recognition/awards/dinners by preparing certificates and sending parent letters.
  22. Assumes such other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

  • High School Diploma
  • Computer skills (Google, Excel, Infinite Campus, Word, Office)
  • Good customer service skills
  • Multi-line phone use
  • Technology operation (copier, fax, printers, badge printers, etc)

Working Conditions:

  1. Includes extremes of temperature and humidity.
  2. Hazards include stairs and communicable diseases.
