Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Classes provide rigorous and evidence-based content, and give students the opportunity to explore theory, learn intervention skills and engage in challenging dialogue with colleagues.

The Communications department within the Dean’s Office/Development Office provides results-oriented strategic internal and external communications, public relations, and marketing solutions designed to meet our school’s objectives.

Position Summary

Graphic Designer/Web Designer is a 100% remote work arrangement, consistent with System Office policy. As part of the communications & marketing team, this Graphic Designer/Web Designer provides in-house design, communications and marketing support to the UNC School of Social Work. The primary purpose of this position is to translate communications opportunities and challenges into well-designed, high-impact digital, video and print materials that visually communicate the message of the brand. Other responsibilities include maintaining an accessible and user-friendly website with support of the University’s ITS department. This position will lead the design and project management responsibilities on multiple simultaneous projects with a variety of visual styles and opportunity for creative input.

This position will lead web governance and perform content updates (content provided by SSW colleagues) for a School of Social Work site, including administration of web governance policies, brand guidelines, writing style guide, digital accessibility policy, and regular content review and site. In addition, this position leads School of Social Work digital accessibility efforts by working collaboratively with the UNC Digital Accessibility Office to evaluate and provide accessible solutions for the communication team’s digital work.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of visual/graphic arts experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Proficiency, skill and applied experience using a website CMS.
Demonstrated mastery of design principles through a portfolio of projects.
Strong design, layout and typography skills.
Proven ability to design print and web work with a demonstrated understanding of current design principles and aesthetics.
Have demonstrated technical knowledge, have good client/customer skills, be team-oriented, be able to independently manage projects from start to finish and have experience working within specific time frames and budgets.
Ability to communicate well with clients throughout the School and with printers and other vendors.
Ability to take an assignment or complex project and independently see it through the design and production processes.
– Must possess proven ability to design and project-manage communications & marketing projects (print, digital, web and video) with a demonstrated understanding of current design principles and aesthetics. This is a fast-paced, high-volume environment that requires the ability to effectively deliver timely, customized design solutions within the University brand and the School of Social Work’s sub-brand.
– Must be a self-sufficient designer with an excellent portfolio, have a strong sense of typography and be extremely detail-oriented. Must have demonstrated technical knowledge, have good client/customer skills, be team-oriented, be able to independently manage projects from start to finish and have experience working within specific timeframes and budgets.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Very strong preference for Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
Strong preference for computer skills on a Mac platform and familiarity with Adobe CC
(particularly InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premier, Acrobat).
Strong preference for 2-4 years minimum experience.
Preference for an NASAD accredited graphic design program graduate.
Google Analytics experience is a plus.
Office 365; RiseVision; Qualtrics experience is a plus.
WordPress experience is a plus.
Experience with standards compliant front-end web design tools, including HTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, jQuery and other XML-based applications is a plus
Prior experience designing for the web and digital applications (websites, emails, gifs, social media, etc.) is a plus
Experience with web prototyping (wireframing) software is a plus (Adobe XD or Sketch).
Preferred familiarity with digital accessibility concepts and WCAG 2.0 recommendations
Experience in an agency setting or working in a billable hours environment is a plus.
