Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

Responsibilities

Fred Hutch is a remarkable place where scientists, clinical providers, administrative professionals, trainees, and fellows work together to make discoveries to improve patient care across both infectious disease and cancer.

To achieve this incredible promise requires significant new data science, machine learning, and clinical data analysis skills across the entire Fred Hutch enterprise. These skills are necessary not just for researchers at Fred Hutch, but translate to all biomedical enterprises. The Leek group is searching for a data scientist who can help develop professional development training in data science, workflow development, machine learning, data analysis, reproducible research and statistics as both asynchronous online courses and in person training courses for Fred Hutch employees. The training data scientist will work collaboratively with the entire Leek group and broader educational efforts at Fred Hutch to ensure that we leverage all existing training resources to help “level up” everyone at Fred Hutch on data science.

Specifically, the data scientist will have the following duties:

  • Developing data science, data workflow, machine learning, statistics, and data thinking courses for Fred Hutch personnel
  • Creating asynchronous online training courses based on both new and existing training material
  • Coordinate with data science training professionals across Fred Hutch and beyond to ensure course materials are developed most efficiently
  • Coordinating community based training and social events including the local useR Seattle chapter and internal Fred Hutch data user groups
  • Collaborating directly with Fred Hutch labs to identify data needs, train individual labs in best practices, and scale ideas to the broader Fred Hutch and world wide biomedical data science community.

Qualifications

  • The successful applicant will have (or will be in the process of obtaining) a masters or PhD in biostatistics, genetics, statistics, computer science, machine learning, or another statistical or computational biomedical discipline
  • 3 years of research and/or education, teaching/training
  • Demonstrated experience with instructional design
  • Experience in teaching data or technical topics to audiences with both limited and significant data science background
  • Creative and thoughtful
  • Experience performing data analysis with scripting languages (R, Python)
  • Experience with workflow managers (WDL, Snakemake, Galaxy)
  • Experience with tools for reproducible research (Github, Gitlab, Jupyter, R markdown, Quarto)
  • Experience analyzing biomedical data in a collaborative environment

The annual base salary range for this position is from $91,936 to $145,318 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
