General Summary: Under the direction of the Workforce Development Apprenticeship Coordinator, the Teacher Assistant Apprentice will support activities designed to stimulate learning in all developmental domains. Offered in partnership with Early Care and Education Pathways to Success (ECEPTS) and College of the Canyons (COC), the Early Childhood Apprenticeship Program is an innovative, earn-and-learn program that will prepare Early Childhood Apprentices to work with young children and families as early childhood educators, and other community-focused workers. The Early Childhood Apprenticeship will provide paid on-the-job training and mentoring, as well as free college coursework, tutoring, and other supports.

Throughout the Early Childhood Apprenticeship Program, Apprentices will complete a total of 2,000 hours of on-the-job training, as well as 12 units of applicable college coursework. On-the-job hours include job shadowing of teachers, centered around the following topics: early childhood development, parent-child relationships, documenting interaction observed during home visits, screening children for developmental strengths and delays, helping families identify goals, linking families to local resources and facilitate transition into Kindergarten.

There are two parts of the Apprenticeship Program; in part one, the Apprentice is assigned to a Center to complete a total of 150 hours of on-the-job training, as well as 6 units of applicable college coursework. In part two, the Apprentice is assigned to a Center to complete a total of 1,850 hours of on-the-job training, as well as an additional 6 units of applicable college coursework. Both on-the-job hours and college coursework will be completed year-round.

This position is term-limited to the duration of part one of the Early Childhood Apprenticeship Program. Upon successful completion of the part one of the Apprenticeship Program, Teacher Assistant Apprentices will be eligible to transition to part two of the Apprenticeship Program, as Teacher Associate Apprentices.

Hiring Range: $16.78/hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under the joint guidance of the WFD Apprenticeship Coordinator and the ECL Center Director, the Apprentice will complete the following tasks:

Job Shadowing Interactions with Children and Families (80%)

Staff Relationships/Development (10%)

Administrative Function/Documentation (10%)

Job Specifications

Minimum Required:

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Professional or personal experience with children and families and/or referring community services to others.
  • Bilingual Required: n/a

  • Travel: Some business related, local travel required; reliable transportation required. Automobile, current auto insurance, current California Driver’s License and DMV clearance required. 10% travel time expected for the position locally.

  • Work Schedule: Part-time (less than 10 hours per week)
  • Work environment: Classroom environment including both inside and outside play areas.
  • Background & Health Clearance Requirements: ECL: Criminal Records (e.g. Live Scan Fingerprinting), Child Abuse Index Check, Sexual Offender Registry, Health, Tuberculosis (TB) test and Immunization clearances required. Must have up to date COVID-19 vaccination (2 shots or Johnson & Johnson 1 shot).
