JOB TITLE: Special Education Assistant Director
REPORTS TO: Special Education Director

PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate the district-wide special education program under the direction of the Special Education Director. The incumbent is responsible for providing leadership, support, and coaching to building administrators, special education staff, and general education staff service identified students.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:
- Under the direction of the Special Education Director, collaborate with other Department Teaching and Learning staff on the implementation of improvement efforts across P/K-12 and district programs and ensure access to core instruction.
- Under the direction of the Special Education Director, collaborate with the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment to provide professional development for all special education staff.
- Collaborate with and advise the Central Office Directors regarding: quality special education program design, program implementation, instruction, and standards based IEP development; the selection, supervision, evaluation and discipline of special education staff; community, parent student, and staff concerns; the development of school-wide plans as they related to special education support and differentiation of instruction based on student needs and their least restrictive environments.
- Provide support and training on the use of standards based I.E.P’s.
- Under the direction of the Special Education Director, coordinate all special education programs assigned K-12 or specialized programs, and determine and monitor out-of-district special education placements.
- Assist the Special Education Director in developing procedures and practices to implement and monitor state and federal statutes and regulations related to Special Education.
- Assist the Special Education Director in the determination of staffing levels, program locations, student placements, staff allocations and resource allocations.
- Assist the Special Education Director in determining, coordinating, and facilitating a variety of meetings and providing staff development that supports students with special needs.
- Assist the Assessment Department in planning and scheduling required state testing for special education students including alternative assessments and provide data to mark the achievement of students with special needs per building and district levels.
- Assist the Special Education Director and Transportation in planning and scheduling transportation for special education students.
- Assist building principals and special education staff by being visible in classrooms and schools, support the supervision/evaluation of staff and programs, and be proactively involved in students being placed in their least restrictive environments.
- Supervise and evaluate assigned certificated and classified staff including ESA staff.
- Meet with parents of identified or potential special education students and, if appropriate, make determinations for plans of action to be shared with school teams.
- Provide support and monitoring to building evaluation teams in assessment/reevaluation activities, program recommendations, eligibility, and required record keeping.
- Develop and maintain a collaborative relationship with the Sunnyside community through outreach activities and participation in community groups.
- Attend IEP meetings as location educational agency representative and make informed decisions when the IEP team is unable to reach an agreement.
- Other related duties as assigned.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Represent Sunnyside School District at ESD and/or OSPI meetings as requested.
- Serve as spokesperson for the district at formal and informal speaking engagements and in the development of written documents describing district programs.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to the Special Education Director. Supervises assigned certificated and classified staff; may oversee work of contracted staff. Interacts regularly with buildings administrators, staff, administrative support staff, other directors, instructional technology staff and human resources staff. Interacts occasionally with certificated and classified staff throughout the district. Contacts with individuals outside of the district include frequent contact with parents and various community groups.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The daily work is performed in an office setting and at various sites within the district. The job incumbent is frequently required to: attend evening meetings or activities; represent the district on potentially controversial matters; sit for prolonged periods; be exposed to computer display terminal for prolonged period; deal with distraught, angry or hostile individuals; and deal with sensitive, confidential information. The incumbent is sometimes required to: stand for prolonger periods; physically restrain students or adults; meeting externally imposed and inflexible deadlines; be exposed to a clear threat to physical safety; and work long hours beyond normal work day.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree in special education, educational administration, or related field.
- Appropriate Washington State administrative credential or admission into an administrative credential program.
- Administrative experience in a public school setting desirable.
- Five years of teaching experience preferred
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of current and emerging research related to learning, teaching and proven instructional practices especially as they apply to special education.
- Knowledge of current and evolving federal and state laws and regulations pertaining to general and, especially, special education.
- Knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of special and general education teachers and para-educators.
- Knowledge of curriculum development and instructional planning and delivery as applied to students with special needs.
- Knowledge of school district budgeting and accounting principals, methods and techniques
- Knowledge of a variety of computer software including: word processing, spreadsheets, databases and email.
- Excellent human relations skills including ability to deal with distraught and angry individuals.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including technical writing and proofing skills.
- Ability to evaluate multiple demands and assign priority for each in order to maximize production and accuracy.
- Ability to exhibit good judgment when dealing with sensitive situations.
- Ability to be self-motivated and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to analyze and apply information contained in collective bargaining agreements and policies and regulations as they related to the instructional setting.
Licenses/Special Requirements
Washington State Professional Education certification as teacher and administrator
Valid Washington State Drivers license or photo identification.
Social Security Card.
