MINIMUM TRAINING & EXPERIENCE

The following education and experience will be accepted:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science/Information Systems and two (2) years of experience in installing CAT5/CAT6, UTP copper feeder cable and fiber optic cable is required. Panduit certification and/or BICSI certification or equivalent preferred. Knowledge and support of access control, audio video systems, cellular towers, and or IP-based camera systems, is desirable, OR;
  • Associate degree in Computer Science/Information Systems and six (6) years of experience in installing CAT5/CAT6, UTP copper feeder cable and fiber optic cable is required. Panduit certification and/or BICSI certification or equivalent preferred. Knowledge and support of access control, audio video systems, cellular towers, and or IP-based camera systems, is desirable, OR;
  • High School Diploma or GED and ten (10) years of experience in installing CAT5/CAT6, UTP copper feeder cable and fiber optic cable is required. Panduit certification and/or BICSI certification or equivalent preferred. Knowledge and support of access control, audio video systems, cellular towers, and or IP-based camera systems, is desirable.

Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License and have and maintain an acceptable, safe driving record.

EMERGENCY DECLARATION STATUS

Non-essential employees will not be required to work during a declared emergency but may be required to work during an undeclared emergency or in the aftermath of an event associated with a declared emergency. On an incident-by-incident basis, the employee’s Department Head will make the determination when the employee will be required to work.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under general supervision, plans installations by studying project goals, plans, manuals, and technical specifications; ordering and gathering equipment, supplies, materials, and tools; assessing installation site; and preparing an installation diagram. Performs skilled work installing, testing, troubleshooting, and diagnosing low voltage infrastructure to include all access controls, audiovisual, data, fiber optics, security cameras, inside/outside plant cable infrastructure and integrated network system components. Effectively performs all aspects of voice, data and audiovisual cable communication system installations. Establishes communications systems by installing, operating, and maintaining voice and data telecommunications network circuits and equipment. Maintains network by troubleshooting and repairing outages, testing network back-up procedures, and updating documentation. Reports to the Network Operations Manager.

SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Installs, terminates, labels, tests, and documents all access controls, audio/video, security cameras, voice communications cables, data, fiber optic cables, to include single mode and multi-mode fiber optical cables, twisted pair, coaxial, stranded, and solid conductor low voltage cables in a commercial environment.

Responsible for installing, maintaining, and servicing a variety of network equipment, installing voice and data communication circuits, security cameras, panic systems, door access, and cabling.

Performs cable support system installation; cable routing and installation; cable termination in wall with modular jacks, equipment racks, punch panels and punch down blocks.

Performs system bonding and grounding. Build out telecommunication and equipment rooms. Installs cable pathway systems (cable trays, cable racks, J-hooks or D-rings).

Terminates, tests, labels, and documents horizontal, backbone and other cables.

Verifies service by testing circuits, equipment, and alarms; and identifying, correcting, or escalating problems.

Performs continuity checks, locates, and corrects wiring errors using measuring instruments.

Documents network by labeling and routing equipment and cables and recording configuration diagrams and specifications.

Monitors and performs citywide infrastructure locate tickets through Sunshine811.

Performs complex technical assignments involving communications systems, instrumentation, and data acquisition/processing systems.

Collaborates with internal and external customers to procure new technology initiatives.

Investigates, diagnoses, corrects, and documents instrumentation or system malfunctions.

Identifies cable paths, support structures, reading of blueprints and site surveys.

Remains current with telecommunications industry standards and principles through regular review and study of technical journals, periodicals, and textbooks, attending training on troubleshooting and installation policies, practices, and procedures, and attending vendor and other industry training courses and seminars.

Documents and tracks time and expenses and provide budget recommendations.

Maintains logs and records of maintenance and repair work performed, and of supplies and materials requisitioned and consumed.

Collaborates with team members to troubleshoot failures and issues derived from test data.

Project Manager representing the IT department for all access control, low voltage, audio/video, fiber citywide projects.

Creates user procedure manuals and processes.

May be assigned to shift work. May be required to work weekends and holidays. May be required to respond to after-hour calls.

Vision Insurance: Vision coverage includes an annual eye exam, frames and lenses or contact lenses in lieu of eyeglasses.

Life Insurance: The City of Palm Bay provides each employee with life insurance in the amount of one time their annual base salary at no cost. Additional coverage is available at the employee’s cost up to the Guaranteed Issue amount of $250,000.

Dependent/Spouse Life Insurance: The City of Palm Bay provides each employee with dependent/spouse life insurance in the amount of $5,000 per dependent at no cost. Additional coverage is available at the employee’s cost.

Short Term Disability: Coverage pays 66 2/3% of employee’s annual base salary during a short-term disability period not to exceed 26 weeks.

Long Term Disability: Coverage pays 66 2/3% of employee’s salary at time of disability after a 180 consecutive day waiting period.

Defined Contribution Retirement Plan: City contributes a base of 3%. Employees may contribute up to 6% and the City will match the employees contribution.

Holidays: 10 holidays and 1 birthday holiday.

Paid Leave: Accrue 96 hours of vacation and sick leave per year. Accrued vacation hours increase after 10 years of service. Administrative leave for exempt employees – 48 hours per year.
