The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Recreation Supervisor in preparing, organizing and directing recreation programs. Performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks related to Fine Arts, Senior Adults, Therapeutic Recreation, Day Camps and other programs as assigned. Work includes routine recreation-related tasks such as scheduling and programming, staff training, organizing, and directing recreation activities and events.

Summary/Objective

Assists the Recreation Supervisor in managing the daily operations of assigned facilities and providing sufficient and quality programs by planning, organizing, coordinating, supervising, and evaluating activities, leagues and events related to programming, and helping to stay within program and facility budgets.

Essential Functions

Assists the Recreation Supervisor in coordinating with other City departments, schools, community agencies, and other user groups to ensure that facilities are utilized at the maximum level of efficiency, and such facilities are adequately supervised and maintained during all activities and events.

  • Utilizes recreation management software to program activities and facilities, communicates with current/past participants, runs reports and trend analysis for program and facility use, and other items as needed.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative professional working relationships with staff, coworkers, participants, and the public through collaboration, active listening, teamwork, and resolving disputes.
  • Exercises independent judgment in the application of league and game rules and operating procedures to promote safety and fair play.
  • Enforces policies, procedures and departmental rules for staff, instructors, volunteers, and facility users.
  • Handles customer facility rental inquiries and billing questions.
  • Leads programs, activities, and events as needed.
  • Responds to call-backs for emergency situations during non-duty hours and take appropriate actions.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Coordinates schedules and provides oversight of staff to cover facilities for MPRD activities and customer rentals.

  • Assists with the oversight of full-time and seasonal employees as well as volunteers and other applicable staff in building operations and program administration.
  • Assists with hiring and training of part-time/seasonal staff, volunteers, and other applicable staff, as needed.
  • Assists in coordinating schedules of volunteers and other applicable staff.

Assists with billing and budget administration.

  • Ensures all programs, activities and facility operations stay within budget limitations through efficient and effective purchase of equipment and supplies, and proper utilization of staff so as not to exceed such budget limitations.
  • Performs end of season billing for sports clubs and other user groups.

Assists with maintenance or facility supervision as needed.

Requirements

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year (full-time equivalent) of experience in support of a recreation program area related to area of assignment; Or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered as meeting the minimum qualifications.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Education and Experience

Education from an accredited college or university majoring in Recreation or a closely related field.
