Position Description

Position Title: Supervisor, Native American Education Support Program
Department/Section: Administrative Center
Supervisor: Director of Inclusion, Equity and Support

General Summary:
Primarily responsible for all aspects of the NAESP, including management of program budget and work plan, supervision of staff, and implementation of programs designed to effectively meet the educational and cultural needs of American Indian/Alaskan Native (AI/AN) students in a supplemental capacity. The Program Supervisor will also design and implement programs which support district goals for increasing student achievement and ensuring equal educational opportunities for all AI/AN students.

Job Duties:

  1. Prepare, develop, coordinate, and account for all aspects of the Navajo Nation Johnson O’Malley (JOM) funds and Indian Education Formula Grant including applications, budget proposals, program evaluations, contract compliance, and reports.
  2. Conduct regular meetings with the JOM Indian Education and Title VI Parent Advisory Committees to provide updates on academic progress and program budget proposals, leading to opportunities for input to enhance program services.
  3. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the job performance of program staff. Provide professional development programs for staff in accordance with district initiatives and goals supporting Native American education.
  4. Assume responsibility for the collection, review, and submission of forms, reports, or data relative to tribal, state, and federal requirements, and regulations as requested.
  5. Assist the Superintendent and Title Programs to consult with affected tribes and tribal organizations as required under ESSA P.L. 114-95 on issues affecting Native students.
  6. Facilitate the collection, organization, and analysis of student assessment data to monitor student performance, and guide program changes for improvement.
  7. Explore and research best practices or innovative programs to enhance the culture, language, and traditions of AI/AN students.
  8. Collaborate with school principals, Curriculum and Instruction department heads, counselors, teachers, and parents to prepare AI/AN students for college and career readiness.
  9. Establish and maintain effective partnerships with community organizations, colleges/universities, businesses, and tribal/state organizations to assist in developing programs for improving student achievement.
  10. Provide leadership, communication, collaboration and advocacy with local and district educators, parent/community organizations, and tribal communities to develop appropriate education programming for AI/AN students utilizing best practices and current data.
  11. Provide professional development opportunities relevant to the the education of AI/AN students, including language, culture, history, and traditions.
  12. Work with program staff to identify and utilize community/tribal resources to assist students and families.
  13. Participate in district professional development activities, represent the district at local, state, and national conventions in matters related to Indian education, and attend mandated meetings as required by funding agencies.
  14. Serve in an advisory capacity and liaison to organizations providing AI/AN programs within and outside of FUSD and the Flagstaff Indian community.
  15. Stay current on issues pertaining to the educational needs of Native American youth.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Valid Arizona Administrative Certificate – Required within two years of hire
  • Valid Arizona Department of Education IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card – Required
  • Advanced degree from an accredited college or university – Required
    • Emphasis in supervision, educational administration, and secondary curriculum – Preferred
  • May be required to work outside normal working hours.
  • May be required to travel to perform work functions.
  • Evaluation experience – Preferred
  • 3 years’ successful experience in teaching, administration, and supervision of Native American programs – Required
  • Knowledge of Native American language(s), culture(s), and traditions/taboos – Required.
  • Proficiency in a Native language – Preferred

SALARY AND BENEFITS
The 2023-2024 salary range for the district’s Supervisor of Native American Education falls on the Ancillary Salary Schedule, grade HH with a base salary range of $76,836 to $85,288, based on a twelve-month contract, consistent with Arizona law. A comprehensive fringe benefits package is also included.
