The Maintenance Worker position, is responsible for the care and maintenance of plantings and landscape beds and performs a wide variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks independently or as a team member. Tasks involve the maintenance, repair and construction of parks, trails, horticulture, and arboriculture using equipment designed for recreation and city facilities.

CLASS SUMMARY:
The second level of the Maintenance Series is responsible for performing routine maintenance and construction activities by operating, and maintaining a variety of equipment, machines, or vehicle. Responsibilities may include: setting up work zones; installing and maintaining signs/posts; patching road; plowing snow; clearing trees and bushes; removing trash; performing visual road checks for hazards, service and repair needs; inspecting and repairing equipment when necessary; minor motor vehicle repairs; and performing related duties as assigned.
Duties / Responsibilities
TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
1. Performs routine maintenance activities for streets, park grounds, athletics field and wastewater treatment facility. This may include installing, fabricating, painting, and erecting street signs; monitoring irrigation schedules; plowing snow; clearing trees, bushes; performing equipment maintenance; and removing trash.
2. Performs routine construction and maintenance activities which includes operating equipment’s and machines for street repair work involving patching holes, installing culverts and drainage pipes; building concrete curbs and gutter; erection and maintenance of ice rinks; and cleaning and televising sanitary and storm sewers.
3. Inspects and maintains equipment which includes performing minor repairs and routine replacements such as changing oil; replacing filters; inspecting tires; and performing other related activities.
4. Monitors and maintains materials, supplies, equipment, and/or other applicable inventory items in assigned area of responsibility.
5. Assists in maintaining variety of information, records and reports.
6. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Qualifications
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
High School diploma or equivalent (G.E.D); and 1 year maintenance and equipment operation or related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS(positions in this class typically require):
- State of MN class B commercial driver’s license with tank vehicle and air break endorsements; or obtain within 6 months of hire;
- Parks and Recreation – Pesticide License, Herbicide License, and Mosquito Spraying License or obtain within 2 years of hire;
KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):
Knowledge of:
- Grounds and facilities maintenance principles and practices;
- Applicable system and structure repair techniques;
- Painting materials and techniques;
- Applicable equipment, materials, and tools used in grounds maintenance activities;
- Applicable standards and regulations;
- Recordkeeping principles;
- Safe work practices.

Hours of Work/Physical and Mental Demands
HOURS OF WORK:
Full Time Position. Monday – Friday, 7:00 a.m – 3:00 p.m. Hours may vary depending on departmental needs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions, intense noises and travel.

Retirement:
PERA (Public Employees Retirement Association)

Health Insurance Coverage Through Medica:
- Coverage for eligible employees becomes effective on the first of the month following a waiting period of thirty (30) days from the first workday.

Term Life Insurance:
The City provides a $25,000 term life insurance policy at no cost to the employee.
Long Term Disability Insurance:
The plan provides long term disability income with a 90 consecutive day elimination period. An employee must be a regular full-time employee and have completed six (6) months of employment in order to be eligible for this benefit.
West Hills Fitness Center:
PERA Qualified Employees, Police/Fire Employees (Full-time and Part-time) have access to the West Hills Fitness Center at no cost as part of the city’s wellness program.
