$15.50 – $17.75 per Hour
Work up to 28 hours per week
Seasonal position (Part-Time/Temporary)

The Parks and Recreation Department oversees Parks and Programs, REACH, Senior Services, Contract Classes, Media and Communications, Special Events, Transportation, and the Pico Rivera Golf Course.
The amenities provided by the Parks and Recreation Department are enjoyed by thousands of people every year. The amenities include 100 acres of parks and open spaces, swimming pool, athletic fields, walking paths, Senior Center, and batting cages.
The Position
This position will assist recreation supervisory and management staff perform all phases of recreation programming, including but not limited to indoor park facilities, senior center, outdoor general park oversight, and special events.
Candidates must have open availability, as this position will be required to work varied shifts between 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, Monday through Friday, and must be available to work early mornings, late evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays based on department needs.
Essential Duties
The ideal candidate will have the ability to perform the following essential functions:
- Oversee the day-to-day operation of the day camp activities.
- Supervise all on-site staff and assist in the preparation of staff evaluations and schedules.
- Plan and facilitate weekly staff meetings.
- Assist with directing of planning day camp activities.
- Maintain appropriate standards for children behavior and positive discipline.
- Plan, prepare and conduct age-appropriate activities.
- Prepare weekly financial reports while maintaining program within budget guidelines.
- Supervise and facilitate activities to provide positive learning experiences for children.
- Provide careful and concentrated supervision of children at all times.
- Provide input and participate in all aspects of the day camp program.
- Maintain a cooperative working relationship with fellow employees.
- Perform daily playground safety inspections.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be available to work varied shifts, Monday – Friday, 6:30am – 6:30 pm.
- Must be available to work early early mornings, late evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be available to attend staff in service training and camp meeting on June 9 and June 10.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to understand community values, traditions, hierarchy structures and roles.
- Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Display good customer services.
- Applicant must have general operation knowledge of personal computer, calculator, and other office machines necessary to carry out assigned duties.
- Ability to speak Spanish is desired.
Experience and Education
- Applicants must submit a copy of their high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent with application materials. Course work in college desired.
- Two (2) years of recreational experience working with the public; leadership experience is desired.
- Applicant must have a general operating knowledge of a personal computer, calculator and other office machines necessary to carry out assigned duties.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Position requires prolonged standing, sitting, walking on level or unleveled surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. Incumbents may be required to lift, carry and/or push objects weighing 50 pounds or more. This position requires near and far vision for reading written documents and in the observation of participants during activities. Acute hearing is also required in providing customer service to public and /or assistance in facility, classroom, or outdoors. Will also be working in outdoor area, and may be exposed to loud noises and extreme weather conditions.
Licenses and Certifications
- Candidates must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License* throughout the course of employment and/or California Identification Card. (*City employees are registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Employee Pull Notice Program)
- Proof of car insurance (to be eligible for mileage reimbursement), if applicable.
- Must possess (within 30 days of hire) and maintain American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA) Infant/Child/Adult CPR, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) and Community First Aid and Safety certifications (online certifications will not be accepted).
Veteran’s credit will amount to 10 points to be added to the interview score. Proof of honorable discharge must be submitted with the application materials in order to be eligible for veteran’s credit. Veterans who wish to utilize this credit must have served on a full-time basis (not reserve or auxiliary) in the armed forces for a minimum of six months (180 days).

Holidays – The City agrees to designate up to 6 paid holidays for represented part-time hourly workers with some exceptions, per memorandum of understanding.
Sick Leave – 24 hours under the California Paid Sick Leave Law for employees working for at least 30 days within a year and satisfying a 90-day employment period.

Retirement – Hourly employees will be enrolled in the Nationwide 401(a) Plan. The City matches the employees’ contribution of 3.75%.
