Position Description

Under general supervision to assist in maintaining the County Animal Shelter facility in a clean and sanitary condition; to monitor the physical condition of all animals being held at the animal shelter; to assist with the care, feeding and placement of animals held at the shelter; to perform a variety of clerical duties and to perform related duties as required.

Example of Duties

  • Assists Animal Control Officers with euthanasia of animals in emergency situations.
  • Receives and releases animals at the County Animal Shelter facility.
  • Makes regular inspections of animals and shelter equipment.
  • Report incidents of sick and injured animals and/or equipment malfunctions to superiors.
  • Assists with emergency treatment of sick and injured animals.
  • Assists with cleaning and disinfecting of shelter premises and kennel equipment.
  • Assists with feeding and watering of impounded animals.
  • Keeps and maintains records and filing system regarding impounded animals, animals under quarantine and dog licenses.
  • Promotes advertising of adoptable animals.
  • Assists with public inquiries and complaints.
  • Explains county ordinances and resolutions related to the care and control of domestic animals to the public as appropriate.
  • Collects fees and issues licenses.
  • Types letters, notes, reports, and warrants and other statistical data; performs other related clerical duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

Proper care and feeding of domestic animals; basic emergency treatment of sick and injured domestic animals; modern office procedures, correct English usage, spelling and grammar.

Ability to:

Recognize normal and abnormal animal behavior; learn to recognize those disease symptoms commonly found in dogs and cats; recognize distinguishing characteristics of different breeds of dogs and cats; care for and safely handle domestic animals so as to avoid injury to persons or animals; deal with the general public in a courteous manner; learn departmental procedures, applicable county ordinances and State laws covering the control and protection of animals; express oneself both verbally and in writing in a clear and logical manner; type 45 w.p.m., file and keep records; write clear and concise reports; work effectively under general supervision; and operate modern office equipment.

Education, Training, and Experience:

Equivalent to graduation from high school and demonstrated experience in the handling /care of domestic animals; six months clerical experience.

Uniform Allowance: $650.04 per calendar year for specific positions split into monthly payments. Payments will be made monthly on the second pay check. Qualifying Classifications: Crime Scene Specialist/Property Room Manager, Deputy Probation Officer I/II/III, Correctional Cook I/II, Correctional Technician, Correctional Officer, Correctional Corporal, Correctional Sergeant, Dispatcher Clerk, Sr. Dispatcher, and Animal Control Officer I/II/III. The County shall pay a two hundred dollar and four cent ($200.04) per calendar year uniform maintenance allowance to Animal Shelter Assistant.

Professional Time Off: 80 hours annually, prorated to 40 hours if hired after July 1st. Qualifying Classifications: Deputy District Attorney I/II/III/IV

Vacation days:

0 – 3 complete years = 80 hours per year.

After 6 months you can take your first week.

3 – 10 complete years = 120 hours per year

10 years+ = 160 per year

Holidays: 13 paid holidays per year.

Life Insurance: $50,000.00 County paid

Sick Leave: 12 days annual sick leave accrual with unlimited accumulation.

Sick leave is accrued at 3.69 hours for each full 80 hours of payroll period.

60 hours of sick leave can be used for immediate family, parent spouse, child or sibling.

Merit: After successfully completing twenty-six (26) pay periods, a 5% merit increase may be granted. Merit increases may be granted annually thereafter to the top step.

Probation Period: New employees remain in a probationary status for 26 pay periods.

Longevity Incentives @ 2.5% for each of the following:

  • 5.5 years (if hired before March 28, 2005)
  • 6 years
  • 10 years
  • 15 years
  • 20 years
  • 25 years

Bi-Lingual pay: $50 per month for specific approved job classifications.
