Job Summary

MAJOR FUNCTION: Provides surveillance of County parks to ensure compliance with the parks and recreation activity schedule, rules and regulations. Works under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator.

Essential Job Functions

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS NEEDED IN ORDER TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the operational, safety and maintenance requirements of multi-purpose recreation sites and event facilities.
  • Knowledge of park permits and other fee requirements.
  • Knowledge of the County’s Thor-Guard lighting detection system.
  • Knowledge on how to operate the County’s automated Musco Lightning detection system, PA systems and scoreboards.
  • Knowledge and the ability to apply and enforce departmental rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing recreational areas.
  • General knowledge in the various activities of recreation.

Abilities:

  • Ability to work outdoors.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio device and/or cell phone.
  • Ability to perform general maintenance tasks, such as, but not limited to operating small hand tools and equipment, handling of trash and receptacles, clean and sanitize public restrooms using appropriate cleaning supplies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good public relations and effective communications with the general public, law enforcement officers as well as fellow employees is essential.
  • Ability to maintain open communication with co-workers and other supervisors.

Skills:

  • Must possess excellent customer service skills.
  • Must effectively convey information to the public regarding recreational resources and handle complaints in a professional manner.
  • Some general office work at the County Skate Park facility is expected and will include, but not be limited to ability to operate a computer, process skater registrations, issue passes, collect fees, ensure the accuracy of monies received, balance cash drawer with daily receipts at end of day and complete incident/accident reports.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:

  • Conduct patrols to provide surveillance and supervision of County parks to ensure compliance with the parks and recreation activity schedule, rules and regulations.
  • Enforce all park rules in a responsible and tactful manner while using fair judgement when making a decision.
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment within County parks.
  • Check all pavilion and field reservations for proper permits.
  • Check and secure facilities before and after events and ensures that lights have been turned off. Resolves complaints and responds to all emergencies.
  • Maintain daily activity records and prepares incident reports. May assist with training employees.
  • Must be able to work weekends, late nights, holidays and/or varied schedules,18 – 24 hours a week.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL SKILLS: Good eyesight and hearing with or without correction. Use of both hands and fingers with dexterity. Frequent walking and standing for long periods of time. Must be able to walk long distances over large and uneven terrain to monitor user activity. Must be able to lift 30-50 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITION REQUIREMENTS: Requires indoor and outdoor work.

Occasional work outside under adverse weather conditions of cold, heat, humidity, rain and other weather elements.

WORK HAZARDS: Inherent risk of injury while working in sometimes harsh conditions and around active athletic activities.

Qualifications

EDUCATION: Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of customer service experience with the general public, preferably in a park and/or recreational setting. Computer and cash handling experience preferred.

LICENSE CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION: Must have a valid Florida Driver’s license and maintain a good driving record. CPR and First Aid certification preferred.

Driving Position – Operating County vehicles and/or equipment is a primary function of this position.
