Description
Located on 7 acres in the heart of Cary, Downtown Cary Park offers an artistic landscape surrounding beautifully distinguished structures and spaces available for reserving to host a variety of gatherings. The Park Steward Coordinator performs routine, semi-skilled, and unskilled work in the care and maintenance of the Downtown Cary Park and Downtown Parking Deck. This is a hybrid position that will perform daily field duties as well as oversee the work of the Park Steward staff. Work is performed under regular supervision by the Facility and Grounds Supervisor. Work will, at times, require additional weekend work or a flexible schedule.
Typical Tasks
- Coordinates schedules and directs work of Park Steward staff;
- Evaluates, trains, and supervises Park Steward staff members;
- Performs park wide maintenance work independently;
- Performs routine maintenance as assigned including but not limited to monitor waste receptacles, trash pickup throughout park, general cleaning, post caution or closed signs, and minor repairs;
- Inspects and reports unsafe conditions, incidents of vandalism and/or graffiti, and other related conditions to the appropriate town staff;
- Works as a member of the Facilities and Grounds Team;
- Assists other Park staff when and where necessary;
- Assists when needed in landscape maintenance tasks such as raking and blowing leaves, pruning, trimming, etc.;
- Removes trash, litter, recycling and compostable items and debris from park walkways, sky walks and general grounds, disposing of all materials in the appropriate manner;
- Provides routine custodial service when/where necessary;
- Performs routine safety inspections and accomplishes minor repair tasks at all park play areas and priorities repairs to playground safety surfacing;
Engages with the public to provide excellent customer service and greet park users with a professional and welcoming attitude; - Provides accurate and relevant information regarding park rules;
- Assists with scheduled events and facility rentals;
- Assists with facility cleanup during hazardous weather and or special events programming.
- Performs all other job-related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of tools and equipment associated with building and grounds maintenance duties; general knowledge of rules and regulations governing parks use by the general public; ability to effectively lead a team; ability to interact positively with the general public; ability to understand written and oral instructions; ability to work independently or within a team setting; technological skills to plan and organize work as well as performing team leadership responsibilities; visual acuity is necessary in order to perform custodial and maintenance functions and observe needed repairs; and the ability to work a flexible schedule.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from High School/GED and considerable experience performing special event support and park and/or landscape maintenance tasks.
Prior experience leading a team or crew is preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Work in this class is medium to heavy and requires exposure to the elements such as heat, cold and rain;
- The physical ability to lift moderate to heavy items is required.
- The ability to walk and stand for long periods, as well as the ability to reach, stoop, kneel, etc., is also required.
Conditions of Employment:
Requires a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
