About the Role: Inspect capital fiber optic underground cable placement and splicing to ensure conformance with specifications, standards, and plans. Will have frequent interaction with contract crews, KUB personnel, and customers during underground fiber construction. Inspects contractor performance, safety, and adherence to KUB standards and specifications. Serves as a liaison between KUB contractors or crews, customers, utility service advisors, and fiber construction supervisory staff. Works independently to investigate, evaluate and resolve issues, primarily through face-to-face contact. Primary point of contact for utility damage and customer property damage. Demonstrates high quality customer service through ownership and thorough resolution of concerns. Maintains a working knowledge of KUB utility infrastructure for all 5 utilities. Some after-hours storm response may be required in addition to the rotational stand-by schedule. Demonstrate flexibility to accept other related duties as required and works closely with other KUB departments to coordinate responses.
Qualifications
Physical Requirements:
Requires the ability to safely operate and get in and out of a vehicle many times per day. Requires the ability to move freely throughout the office to review maps, drawings, and bill information while meeting with internal and external customers. Requires the ability to move freely about customers’ properties over all types of terrain and walking considerable distances. Requires the ability to work under pressure while addressing numerous customer issues related to utility services. Requires the ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Fundamental understanding of electric, water, gas, and/or wastewater systems, in addition to operational experience or direct public interaction
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills with experience communicating difficult messages in person and by phone
  • Solid organizational and time management skills
  • Computer experience including Microsoft Office programs, e-mail, messaging, GIS, etc.
  • Valid driver’s license

Preferred Requirements:

  • Five (5) or more years of utility specific construction (electric, gas, water and wastewater) and/or field experience dealing directly with internal and external customers
  • Broad working knowledge of KUB’s utility infrastructure acquired through experience in a similar position
  • Strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills
  • Advanced proficiency with computer software such as GIS, PeopleSoft, Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Excel, Access, PowerPoint and others
