Position Summary
The Student Access Coach will work with English Language Learners to support them in navigating the transition to college and using the technologies necessary to be successful students. The Student Access program pilot primarily serves high school seniors who are interested in attending college by providing one-on-one coaching as well as group workshops on topics such as financial aid, scholarships, college applications and financial literacy. The Coach will continue to support these students as they enter college, as well as serve ELL students currently enrolled at STC. The Student Access Coach will report to the director of Access and Workforce Opportunity and will collaborate with EL liaisons and ELD teachers in the Sioux Falls School District as well as colleagues at Southeast Technical College.
Essential Functions

  • Working in conjunction with the Director of Access and Workforce Opportunity and the Director of Institutional Effectiveness, this individual will:
  • Evaluate college preparedness through use of intake assessment.
  • Perform individualized college preparedness coaching based on the results of the assessment and any personal goals shared by the student.
  • Develop relationships with local high school students, STC colleagues and SFSD EL liaisons.
  • Utilize a trauma-informed (ACES) approach to understand and support a student’s long-term academic, professional and personal goals.
  • Assist students with technology needs.
  • Plan regular events to build students’ social capital and networking experience.
  • Research best practices in career and college readiness for ELL and other underserved students
  • Maintain data on all students involved in Student Access program pilot.
  • Connect students to STC resources.
  • Maintain a positive learning environment.
  • Participate in professional staff development activities.
  • Develop technological resource aids in conjunction with Educational Technology Integrationist

Position Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or related field; ENL endorsement preferred.
  • Experience: Experience collaborating with multilingual learners, with college-readiness or other youth programs, and/or advising in employment services, non-traditional education programs, or related experience.
  • Other requirements:
    1. Computer skills: Proficient in Microsoft Windows and Office 365 platforms with ability to learn Mac platforms.
    2. Strong technology skills to use platforms such as Zoom or Teams, to navigate common technology problems and support digital literacy.
    3. Willingness to learn the Jenzabar Campus Portal and LMS, as well as textbook software applications (e.g., MindTap, Hawks, etc.)
    4. Ability to create audio and video recordings and presentations with the campus lecture capture system.
    5. Communication: ability to actively listen and to effectively communicate with others of all cultural backgrounds through written and oral communication
    6. Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA regulations.
    7. Ability to build strong mentoring relationships and encourage others through coaching and development.
    8. Ability to resolve conflicts, hold self and others accountable.
    9. Ability to use a variety of instructional strategies appropriate to student needs.
    10. Ability to collaborate effectively with people regardless of their race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age, sexual orientation, genetic information, or job type.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
General office environment with standard office equipment. Lighting and temperature are adequate. Moderate noise levels typical of an office environment due to staff and student conversations and noise from office equipment. Additional equipment associated with ancillary instruction may be available and may have an effect on lighting, sounds, and temperature. Occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions when traveling to other locations.
